Oyster Shell Substitute?
    #2573916 - 04/18/04 12:46 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

Hey all,
I'm about to do some casings, but I can't find any crushed oyster shellls around in the stores. Where can I find this, and if not, what can I use as a substitute? Can I effectively case without it?

crushed oyster shells are calcium carbonate, which you can find at a health food store or a whole foods market pretty easily...
but you don't need them for a casing; unless yr using peat...
they serve mainly as a pH buffer

You can also go to a pet store and find pure CaCO3... it's used as a diet supplement for reptiles.

:shake:
"...Comprised of calcium carbonate, ground oyster sell is similar to limestone grit in its buffering action and its structural contributions to the casing layer. But oyster chell should not be used as the sole buffering agent because of its low solubility in water." (Paul Stamets' and J.S Chilton: The Mushroom Cultivator)

you can most definitely find crushed limestone at your local building material store, or look in your yellow pages under "gravel, rock, & sand." you can buy them by kg bags dirt cheap, and it's excellent for ph adjustment. don't bother wasting your money on small packages of crushed oyster shells at the pet store.
