Something along the lines of folky black metal. The closest reference point I can think of is Opeth, minus the Opeth sound and more folk influence.
In other words, heavy, but not always.

Very good album  Pale Folklore is pretty good too. I was listening to that yesterday and forgot how good it was.

I love the album too. Apparently that statue and the ones in the slip cover are all from Oregon, or one of the states up that way. But yea, awesome album.

I joke, and call it rainy day metal.

But it's really just chill metal with a folk flavor added.

It really IS rainy day metal. It both soothes me and makes me feel slightly sad. Despair and GLOOOOM.

I've heard of He Is Legend. Aren't they metalcore? I kinda lost track of all the metalcore band names.

idk what metalcore is.. im not crazy about metal... but have come across some good bands.. im more in rap, alternative, and modern rock.

im listening to "and the great cold" right now.. they are def an interesting band.. the other song i listened to was all instrumental.. but still soothing.

An interesting side note, a member from Agalloch has a side project called Especially Likely Sloth. It's as far as you can get from the style of Agalloch and reminds me of some twisted, deranged electronic music for mentally disturbed folk. It actually makes me laugh.

I wouldn't call Agalloch death metal at all. they have some of those elements, but thats a fraction of it all that just adds to the atmosphere of their albums.

I'm listening to The Mantle at the moment. You get me in the mood
Up to "I Am The Wooden Doors". I love this song.

Yeah, I love Agalloch.

If I were asked for a label, I would say "dreary progressive rock/metal". It's something you might play in the dead of winter, or with a bleak, gray sky...but it's epic and doesn't necessarily depress you at the same time.

"Hallways of Enchanted Ebony" from Pale Folklore is probably my favorite Agalloch song.

as embers dress the sky, this old cabin, dead winter days, not unlike the waves, bloodbirds....all of them are some of my favorite songs right now.  though I couldn't imagine listening to them in any other form outside the albums...

just realized that upload didn't work.  I think it's like .5 MB above the limit...I can't make the any smaller.  :frown:

probably for the better....so long as people check out the album(s) anyway.

Kveldssanger is pretty much all acoustic though. their first album Begrtatt is much more like Agalloch, IMO. better album too, I think.
John Haughm, the mastermind behind Agalloch cites Ulver and Bergtatt specifically as heavy influences towards Agalloch's sound. good stuff, for sure. Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, and Natten's Madrigal are all great...they for "The Trilogie," which is 3 albums in Ulver's black/folk metal period.

if I could figure out how to resize the songs (some are over 10MB) I'd just post the album here, but I can't do it with cool edit pro or anything for some reason.  in the meantime the official site http://www.agalloch.org/ has 3 songs available to listen to, one from each album.  http://www.demonoid.com has the mantle and the bulk of their catalogue available as well, but you'll have to register(free) and have a torrent program such as utorrent.  there's a handful of live clips on youtube.  if you like any of this stuff, buy the album.  this band is fairly unknown and they've only played a few live shows in near ten years of being together because of that.  buy their albums.
sure that itunes will probably have them as well if anyone wants to try that.

it's not really that. some of their songs are pretty thickly layered, so a live transition would be pretty difficult. the reason they haven't played many live shows is that the band isn't very big and they don't have much support being on a smaller label. they just did a pretty big tour in europe in 2006. also all or most of the members of the band are involved in at least 1 other project, most of them are in 2 or 3. funny to think that something as great as agalloch is just kind of a "side project."
