Hydrochloric acid

where can I buy it?

I thought it would be fairly easy to obtain as it's used in several printmaking processes, but I can't buy it anywhere. All the big chemical suppliers require business licenses and vendor codes. I had one fellow string me along, telling me that they only delt with 55 gallon drums but he could possibly send me a free sample, well I got an email today and that has fallen through; they no longer carry it.

So can anyone recommend a source?

Try getting something called "muriatic acid" from a pool store.

It's hydrochloric acid in water.

Chlorine (Cl): Hydrochloric acid

Muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid, or hydrogen chloride dissolved in water. This is the same acid present in the human stomach, and it is used for cleaning oxide scale from the surface of steel, to neutralize bases in effluents from chemical plants, and in chrome tanning.

Yep. They sell huge quantities of pretty strong stuff for cheap. I bought 2 gallons of approx 12 molar HCl for about 20 bucks, if I remember correctly. The stuff is so strong that it fumes when opened.

Just something to add to this...if you are going to be using the hydrochloric acid ANYWHERE that it might come in contact with air (meaning not in a lab, not using lab materials) make sure that you have adequate ventilation.

Hydrochloric acid is extremely soluble in water, to the point where it will dissolve into the water in the air. You can actually see this as a fog of HCl over top of the acid. You do not(!) want to breathe this in!
