Cow field mushroom hunting..?

Hi, guys, I'm new to the boards and to the entire mushroom world (only tripped once). I've decided, due to the insufficient supply of cultivated mushrooms in my area, that I will be hunting for mushrooms while they are in season.

I live in Tennessee, in a semi-rural area, so there are plenty of cow fields nearby just waiting to be scoured for these psychadelic treasures.

Are there any specific guides for hunting in cow fields out there? I know to post for an ID if I find any mushrooms (using spore prints and the mushrooms themselves), but I was wondering if there was any source of information I could study a bit before actually going out there and searching; or if any experienced cow field hunters could give me any pointers (do the shrooms always grow OUT of the poo, or are they under it, etc.)

I searched a bit for this information on my own, but figured I'd ask for some help from you guys.

The mushrooms you're after (Psilocybe cubensis), most frequently grow directly out of manure. They can sometimes be found growing from the grass in cow fields (likely, where a cow pie once was), and sometimes inside or underneath the manure.... But I wouldn't go digging through shit if I didn't see any mushrooms on top.

i wish you the best of luck man, but if you are in the right place at the right time you wont need it. especially down here in the gulf coast. :thumbup: ive never heard of cubes in Tennesee. prove me wrong somebody?
tips:
in the proper conditions and the right areas shrooms can be abundant. season is generally in spring through fall for cubes. as long as there is around 90-100% RH (humidity) and temps dont dip below 60 at night you should be in good. there are some rules of thumb though:
1. ask permission, or go very early (3. am) with no flashlight. shrooms can be seen at night in good conditions. you on the otherhand should not be seen. dont be stupid about it.

2. look for fields with ponds and or creeks and rivers. low dipping areas where fog and moisture can roll into are a plus. also look for fields AWAY from houses or residences.

3. when in the field walk in a grid-like pattern and cover as much area as possible back and forth.

4. identify every last shroom you pick. this is important. make damn sure you have the right kind or if in doubt- THROW IT OUT. no exceptions. purple spores, bruises blue, gowing out of dung then you are likely OK if it has all these traits. any others throw OUT. one shroom can mean your doom.

also keep in mind that there are a ton of lookalikes, most are poison. Cubensis are considered LBM's or (little brown mushrooms 0...most of which can send you to the ER. take lots of pic's before you dry them, and get multiple oppiniond before trying them.

Huh, I it says on the state list of actives on this site, that cubes grow in TN. Are they rare, or is that a mistake?

Psilocybe cubensis [Earle] Sing., is not an LBM mushroom.

It is actually a medium to sometimes large mushroom, the largest to contain low amounts of psilocine and psilocybine and use to be known as Stropharia caerulescens, Namatoloma carulescens and Stropharia cubenesis Earle among others.

Little brown mushrooms refers to mushrooms which are tiny and meatless and not worth eating at all.

And the phrase 'LBM' has nothing to do with a big meaty mushrooms such as Psilocybe cubensis.

You should also look for Panaeolus subbalteatus also. I'm sure it grows abundantly in grass, cut hay, and horse manure in Tennessee. Do a search for it. It's not the most potent mushroom around, but it can be quite abundant. Psilocbye caerulipes, the blue foot, may also grow in Tennessee as Yessup says. There were a lot of posts on these boards by Shroomydan last march or april. Do a search, his posts have probably the most detailed descriptions and best ever pictures of the blue-foot (or likely a closely related species). In any case, it's still a bit early, but when the weather warms up you may have some luck. Also, I agree with mjshroomer - what shroomsynergy said about P. cubensis is completely wrong.

Shroomey Dan's Ohio shrooms turned out to be a new species and are not P. caeulipes.

A paper will appear at the end of the year which will name and identify the new species.

Everyone will be surprised about this cool shroom.

Ah, thanks for all the info ShroomDoom, it certainly helps.

Yessup, I'm in Middle Tennessee, sometimes in the Cookeville area, sometimes about 30 miles north of Nashville. The Blue Foot, eh?

I've heard of people here finding them in cow patties before, but I've never looked for 'em myself, so I'll let you all know my findings..or lack thereof.

As for the right conditions....should I go a few days after the first good rain at the right temperature, or should I wait for a second or third good rain?

the first hot day after a rain. temps must have been in the solid 70s for weeks to let the mycelium get a good hold first. shoot for april and especially may. april showers bring may mushrooms. in the meantime it wouldnt hurt to kick over a few turds and survey for mycelium growth. it looks like white fluffy stringy strands or cottony growths in the underside of the poo. good luck, and happy hunting!

That is exciting news. Its generally good to see some pioneering work done in mycology. Now if only more people would start utilizing the Phylocode instead of the creationist Linnean taxonomy....

It will not be instead of, until the phylogeny can be referred to by a word (basically, describing the phylogeny in terms that don't require another page of explanation be added on, or, a link to another page).
To understand even the linnean fundamentals does require a lot of reading, however, names have been established, so that references may be made without clouding the main point, and if an individual wishes to understand what exactly, the latin name is referring to, all they have to do is look up the name.  So far, the phylocode still has no means for reference, making it very user unfriendly. 
Now, my emphasis is on accuracy, not whether it is user friendly or not, so I think the phylogeny is very important and should not be dismissed.  But for most users who access this forum, they just want the ""Readers digest" version, and that is where a functional name for reference of each organism is crucial.

I will begin to incorporate the phylogenic associations into writings(typings) when I Can type it out.
