Resistance to fungicide by P. tampanensis?

Hi all,

A friend received a tampanensis print recently which was cultured in a number of ways (which I will post about separately and in due course) but was chiefly inoculated onto store bought uncoated lawn seed. My friend wasn't aware at the time about included fungicides but it turns out that these seeds have almost certainly had a THIRAM fungicide treatment (Tetramethylthiuram disulfide see: http://www.osha.gov/dts/chemicalsampling/data/CH_271700.html). The reason why he can't be sure is that the packet he bought is a discontinued line - the newer range have treatment indicated on the box whereas this one doesn't (not all necessarily do have the indication in Australia).

4 containers of this lawn seed containing perennial and annual rye grass seeds were inoculated 9 days ago.

When my friend discovered the thiram treatment possibility and saw no growth on the seeds he came close to throwing out the seeds, but something told him to wait and see.

Today he noticed that one of the containers has a patch of whitish growth indicating a successful spore germination in this container. None of the others show any sign of growth at the moment.

Now the possibilities are:

1. Lawn seeds are untreated and this is just a routine growth.

2. Lawn seeds are treated but the initial soaking may have washed off enough thiram that this patch has successfully grown.

3. Lawn seeds are treated but high temperature of PC sterilising destroys the agent.

4. Lawn seeds are treated but the spores have a resistance to thiram.

Too early to tell for sure but the lawn seeds were soaked for 10 hours and then loaded into the containers without any rinsing before being sterilised.

The last possibility is intriguing since if it is the case then this strain may be valuable to preserve. Are there any other cases of mycelia being resistant to fungicides? The resistance to H2O2 is well known but that is not a specific fungicide.

Any input welcome.

Large numbers of spores in a concentrated area can overwhelm just about any fungicide. Growers have even inoculated peroxided agar with a large swipe of spores and had a few survive to germinate. The other possibilities exist as well, of course.
