Let's start a Traveler's thread.

Each of you are localers to a certain place, may be a large city or just a small town.


But either way, chances are you've grown and explored your residence to an extent where you may have an "inside scoop" to the best places to eat within your area.


I want to create a thread for travelers to various places. providing knowledge of the best "local specialties".

Places which are NOT mainstream, popular places (i.e. hey guys check out this place called Applebees".





Philadelphia (East Falls)

"Villa Di Roma"

On Washington St, within the Italian Market. Lots of very quality, family-style rustic italian cuisine. I consider myself somewhat of an Italian food snob, I'm hardly satisfied by the grand majority of italian places I eat, and this place definitely meets my expectations.

THey serve lots of large skillet-style portions of homemade dishes you really can't find in most Italian places out west.

Recomended dishes: Sicilian Chicken Marsala, the Escarroll, Tuscan Fettuccini.



"Apollo's"


Conrade and Queen Lane in East Falls

I've pretty much tried long and hard to discover the "ultimate cheesesteak" in Philadelphia. I've been to pretty much all the big name places, Jim's, Steve's, Pats, Ginos, Chubby's, Delassandro's.

But Apollo's takes the cake.

I pay alot of attention to detail when it comes to cheesesteaks and every great place has it's own unique twist. Apollo's over-bakes their cheesesteaks after assembly, something NONE of the above mentioned places do. On top of that they really are liberal with the meat and cheese, to the point where both are leaking out of the italian roll (which is also baked fresh daily).

Recomended: Chicken Cheesesteak, Cheesesteak Hogie

This is a great idea for a thread. If you're ever in Omaha, Nebraska, I recommend:

Louie M's Burger Lust Cafe
1718 Vinton St

They have the best burgers on earth, NOT TO MENTION, the best hashbrowns in the UNIVERSE. Literally. I am spoiled by their hashbrowns, I can't order hashbrowns anywhere else anymore because Louie's are too damn good. Nothing will ever top them. So yeah, get some hashbrowns.


A great place for a sandwich and some cake is Razzy's Deli. On each table, they have a small selection of cards from Trivial Pursuit games, so you and a friend can quiz each other while you eat.

For the best authentic Mexican food in Omaha, go to El Aguila. The restaurant, located on Vinton Street, has a mariachi band playing live every weekend. The prices are a bit high for mexican food, but its so worth it. Its the best mexican food you'll get in Omaha.

If you want some CHEAP mexican food at 2 in the morning, don't go to taco bell. Go to Alvarado's on N. 90th Street. They're open all night and you get a ton of food for a reasonable price.

Tired of eating crap pizza from pizza chains? Try Angie's on 10th and Pacific. They're primarily an italian food place, but you can order pizza for takeout or dine in. They're just up the street from the Old Market downtown, so if you're visiting Omaha, chances are you'll be in the vicinity. Angie's pizza has the sweetest italian tomato sauce you've ever tasted.

I'm a sushi freak. And this is one of the best sushi bars no questions asked. Always fresh fish, perfect rice, amazing dishes.. decent prices compared to most sushi places. I give this place a 9 out of 10. Extremely tiny though.. on a busy weekend you could wait over an hour for a table.
I recommend the Nabeyaki Udon, Calamari Salad, and Rainbow Maki. Wash it down with an Asahi.

Again, another amazing sushi place. DC area has some of the best sushi bars in the country imo. Expensive, and usually crowded, but very much worth it. They always have at least 2 grades of toro (fatty tuna).. get some. And try the spicy scallop roll.

I told you I was a sushi freak right? Anyway, this is another top-notch place. Small, excellent service... amazing food. They have quite a wide variety of your standard cooked asian dishes.. but their sushi is the real reason to go.

Scorpios Charcoal Grill

A Greek owned restaurant. Best cheesesteaks and gyros in the Virginia/DC/MD area that I've ever tried, hands down. The prices are pretty cheap, the portions are massive, the menu is extensive, and the food is awesome.

Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant

A Japanese Vegetarian restaurant. Amazing. The food is incredibly cheap and extremely tasty, very big portions too that leave you stuffed. A huge variety of herbal teas, soups, appetizers etc to choose from... and it's all vegetarian! Very small and homey little restaurant with sunflowers on everything :grin:

Good Frickin' Chicken

Middle Eastern place with everything from traditional shawermas to mac and cheese (which I've heard is no good). But the real reason to go: THE ROTISSERIE CHICKEN. It's served with this amazing spiced pita bread along side an orgasmic garlic dip. Creating tacos with the forementioned items is crucial to your well being.

This Mexican restaurant is located on Evergreen in East LA. They serve the HUGEST burrito I've ever seen, name the Manuel Special. It is a monster.

Great burgers, patty melts, fried chicken. It's really cheap, really tasty and only a lil' ghetto.

Louisiana Fried Chicken & Seafood
There's one on Lake Ave. just a few blocks below Woodbury. There's also one at the corner of Fair Oaks Ave. and Washington. Great fried chicken, seafood, shrimp, donuts, rolls, fries. Soul food, brother!

Pasadena CA
The Hat
Lake Ave just a couple blocks North of the 210 Fwy. Great pastrami, bugers, etc.

Lucky Boy
Man, oh man, this place needs a space to set it off. Arroyo Parkway a block South of California Blvd. Great burgers, patty melts, club sandwiches, but what this place is really great for is their breakfast burritos! They are the bomb!

Mamma's Brick Oven
Located on Fair Oaks just South of the 110 Pasadena Fwy, this take-out/eat-in Italian restaurant is some homestyle shit! Their garlic knots are the bomb! They have bomb sandwiches and bomb pasta too.

Too stoned to do any more thinking. Will post more later.

And Lucky Boy breakfast burritos are AMAZING. If you order it with sausage they stuff whole sausages into the burrito vertically.

This joint is 24 hours AND is frequented by every weirdo / backpacker/cabbie/and me you can possibly think of - you can eat in, if you dont mind noise or crowds, or take out. But this food will change you.

Monster Sushi

Super sized rolls, awesome (almost perfect)sashimi. Fried, green tea ice cream and gorgous negamaki. Ahh man, I wish I was there now. Lots of campy godzilas aboud, but sitting at the sushi bar is great if you travel alone, or want your food super fast. Reccomened: Sashimi deluxe and fried green tea ice cream. <mouthgasam>

I was just in the DC area and I wanted to try out a good restaurant.  Unfortunately the Michellin guide does not rate the DC metro area so I had to look at the Zagat guide.  Based off that I went to....

"Komi"

Good place Id say, not the best food Ive had but quite enjoyable.  Everything was cooked well, but nothing was as overly original as I was hoping.

So overrated. They work slow as FUCK on purpose just so there's always a huge line outside so it looks more desirable from the street..
If the line gets too short, they will slow down considerably or even walk away until it builds back up.
I'd rather go to Roscoe's chicken and waffles heh

Aside from that one, MistUNGA knows what's up in so cal.



El Tepeyac may very well be my favorite mexican restaurant of all time, just based on how unique their food is.  They use really large whole chunks of avocados, big slabs of juicy asada, carnitas, roasted peppers and scrambled eggs in their burritos.


The Manuel Special is pretty good, but their other burritos and more obscure menu items are where it's at.  The Hollenback Machaca is just something you won't find in 99% of mexican restaurants in this country.

I live in LA also, that mexican food place is ok I guess.  Mexican food is a dime a dozen in LA, Ive never been able to take people seriously who claim to have found the best one.  Hit up East Los, try not to get shot, and prepare yourself for the most and greatest mexican food anywhere.

it's where all the localers go.  The inside of the restaurant is decorated with kid's pictures, a bunch of chubby mexican kids in graduation gowns.


pretty funny but those mexican grandmas know what they're doing.

Gaia is a bit expensive, but if you're vegan, chances are you're used to the higher price tag on a meal, the food is great, the cookies are FANTASTIC... Organic eatery is the best place i've been in a while. not fancy or anything, but generous portions of deliciious local grown completely organic food for a steal of a price... i discovered it during dunegrass festival last year, for all festival goer's it is only a 20 minute straight drive away and totally worth it... there's another organic place in glen arbor also near the festival that i don't remember the name of, price is slightly higher but it's closer to the festival and still killer food, however it's not all local grown...

summary: Bells and Founder's are the two greatest breweries in Michigan both of which have a good menu.. Hopcat is a GREAT bar with 49 constantly changing beers on tap with a focus on michigan brews, other micros, and belgian beers.. The bottled selection is HUGE (i believe over 250 varieties) as well, but stay away from the crack fries, yes they're called crack fries, they're that addicting... all the food is great though. remember though, good beer can be expensive.

if your in the San Diego area you should go to Ocean Beach, CA and eat at HODAD's. best burger i've EVER had.  sign outside says 'no shirt, no shoes, no problem'.  there's even an old chopped up VW bus that you can sit and eat in.

my favorite places to dine here are two vegetarian restaurants.
first off, to dive right into that funky Santa Cruz atmosphere i recommend the Saturn Cafe.  its a trippy looking restaurant.  they cook with a lotta locally grown organic ingredients, and they serve a few different organic brews for those of you who enjoy some booze  :drinklager: its a fuckin great place to eat.  plus i got a lotta good memories there...  :drooling: wake up on beach :drool2: , drop some acid :tripping: , drive to saturn :mariokart: , take some bong hits in the parking lot to help the acid along before goin in :bongload:, and then.. the best peanut butter milkshake there is :tongue2:. what a good way to start the trip/day.      i like the avacado and cheese sandwich for when i'm not tripping and i want my tummy nice and full.( fake meat scares me, and its so packed with veggies  ).  oh, and if you need to use the restroom there they dont have one for men.. or women.  but they have one for robots and one for aliens.

In the San Diego Metro area, though in reality its a drive north from the city, I enjoy Pizza Port.  Its a pizza and beer place.  They make their own beer and also have a great beer selection considering that the worlds best beer comes from the area.
