Food Porn & Review: The Fatburger 1
#7952942 - 01/29/08 09:14 PM (16 years, 3 days ago) |

In my most humble opinion, a nearly perfect hamburger.

To be within the graces of its odor is enough to make a grown man howl. Holding in one's hands, the warmth of the seared steaming beef patty emboldens his hunger. Clenching jaws around its soft buns, crunching and chewing deliciously garnished flesh into ecstasy.
Behold!

[a travisty to be sure: there is no cheese on this particular burger] edit: here's the fat cheese

I will forgive you, for you know not the wonders of a spectacularly fried egg atop a quality hamburger! If I may however impart some solid advice, if you find yourself in such an establishment, do give it a try.

If you go into it with the mentality that it is supposed to be in competition with an In-n-Out, Sonics, Whitecastle, Wendys, McDonalds, what have you... then yes you may be quite disheartened by its above average cost and wait time. I'll even grant, there are days when the cooks are stressed or the cosmos just aren't having it, and you may end up without the perfect burger. Such is life, my friend! But with the appropriate set and the stars aligned, it can be a wholly awesome experience I assure you.

I got a Fat Burger right up the street.
Its really not good at all. Fudrucker's is far better. Hell, even Island's is.

Oh Senor, it is a crying shame the guilt you must feel in not being able to adequately appreciate such an exhibition of culinary mastery that is the Fat Burger. Fuddruckers and Islands, I'll take the later for their fries and their simmered/pulled pork tacos - whatever they're called - but dare I say that they just can't compare!
I suppose opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one, and yours definitely stinks.

Wonderful! The "Luther Burger" is also a sinful treat, being a bacon cheeseburger on a Krispy Kreme doughnut bun. The HamDog is another saturated delight sure to drop some jaws (for subsequent consumption thereof)...

What other fat burgers have all ya'll encountered 'round this here globe, if I might ask?

Red Robin has a burger like that, well with an egg.
I like Red Robin's hickory burger... it has some crunchy onion things... they have unlimited fries there too... but it's hard to even eat half of your first serving.
there's no place here that has legendary burgers just the usual Red Robin, Fudruckers, and plain fast food joints.
OH yeah... there is a small chain here called "Goldies". They have a 'special seasoning' (that I believe is mostly season salt and MSG LOL) but it's really good on burgers and chicken.

Can't deny the prowess of MSG in flavorism!
Red Robin certainly offers up a sporting array of tasty burgers.
Though the service has been shotty, and the fat (unlimited) fries I wouldn't write home about, it is most certainly a notable burger establishment worthy of mention.

Did I hear that ISLANDS had better burgers? they are only good for their happy hour specials

In my defence, I did note my love for In-n-Out and the Original Tommy's in another thread, the one which inspired me to create this one in fact. My undying love for burgers is dynamic, never imprisoning myself to any specific brand for heavens!
"In-n-Out is a good burger, when you're in the mood for it. The Original Tommy's is no slouch neither, but again, when you're in the mood for it. I think that at the present moment, my favorite burger is from Fatburger, specifically a Fat Cheese with Egg. Wish I had a picture of one, but in keeping with the original post, I have this from one of my hundreds of trips to In-n-Out made in the Fall of 2005..."

No burger bashing here, this is a thread for lovers of the burger indiscriminate!

I have not tried FatJack's in Studio City... Don't get out that way too often, but if you can confirm that this is it, I'm game to do my best to get it in me!
Fat Jacks (off-site link) 11402 Ventura Blvd Studio City, CA 91604
On that note, I will also suggest:
Mo's Fine Foods 4301 W Riverside Dr Burbank, CA 91505
Finally, a place that isn't afraid to serve you an honestly medium-rare fresh ground burger!

it's very hard for me to find a burger that can actually fill me up.
There's a restaurant back home called Mickey Finns which had a double bacon cheese burger...but only topped out aroun 2/3lb. So ill have to eat my entree, then most of my date's entree, too. I should be fat.
My favorite flavor per dollar, however, still goes to portillos. Hands down. Char burgers PWN. I get like three of em.

Perhaps nothing has better satirized our cultural culinary dichotomy - what we know we're supposed to eat vs. what we actually eat - than a classic scene from a 1992 episode ("Bart's Friend Falls in Love") of the animated TV show The Simpsons. As forever overweight Homer sprawls on the living room couch, watching a segment about America's obesity epidemic entitled "I'm Okay, You're Too Fat" on the investigative-reporting program Smartline, he quickly grows bored and restless because the show is too serious and lacks entertainment value. Too lazy to get up and fetch the just-out-of-reach remote control to change the channel, Homer reluctantly continues to watch Smartline, which finally piques his interest when it cuts to a commercial for a fast food outlet. Homer drools in ecstasy as the advertisement's voice-over describes the restaurant's new offering:
"We take eighteen ounces of sizzling ground beef, and then soak it in rich creamery butter. Then we top it off with bacon, ham, and a fried egg. We call it . . . the Good Morning Burger."

This thread brings tears of joy to my eyes.
And to all of you who KEEP INSISTING that fatburger isn't that great, it's because you've been eating at these SHITTY FRANCHISED locations that don't even fucking hold a candle to the ORIGINAL STAND.
NO FATBURGER LOCATION that i've been to outside the original has ever come close to the quality you get from the Last great Stand.
If you get the chance, go to the Original fatburger, and i garuntee it'll far exceed your experiences with the expansion locations.
The same can be said with another great fast food chain, Tommy's. The original location on Rampart is EASILY the best quality version of Tommy's you can get.

one thing i like about tommys is that they thick-cut the tomatoes and pickles.
i have so many fond memories of going to tommys after a little league game and just getting my hands covered in grease and beautiful mystery-paste.
the chili cheese fries are a meal in itself. the Mega Combo can feed a small family.

I have to totally disagree with you on the Tommys burger thing. Ive been to the original numerous times, and to the other random ones, and really I found no difference. My favorite is the one by the big ass Budweiser plant however, but thats just because I like looking at the beer factory.
Never tried the original Fatburger though, just the shitty one in the Valley I think near the 101 exit De Soto Ave.

I don't know what thread you've been in (must've gotten confused in the whoosh of the forum switch ), but Tommy's was noted via the Cityguide link to Best Burgers in Los Angeles from Post #7953126, and again by yours truly in Post #7953150.
I unfortunately don't have any self-produced images of the Original Tommy's, but it typically would appear to be any ol' burger smothered in smooth - almost diarrheal - brown pasty chili. My brother in law used to joke that they keep it so deliciously smooth by continuously flatuating into the giant vat of chili behind closed doors. Perhaps not, but at any rate - it is a great burger, though certainly necessitating additional CHILI PEPPER POWER to cut through the heavy feel of that greaseball.

My favorite Tommy's item would have to be their sausage and egg breakfast sandwich. Good god is that thing delicious (only served until 11am)! The Chili Boat with everything, extra onions, and a bag of tortilla chips for dipping is a great item ToGo, as you can easily reheat the chili without the disappointing soggyness that would become of something wrapped in a chili slathered bun. Chili Cheese Dogs are also advised.

A few miles from me is the world famous lions tap. Voted best burger in the nation (I forget what year) but damn they make a great burger. Secret ingredients for the ground chuck make them melt in your mouth.
Greasy as all hell and served on a paper plate:)

There comes a point, though, when a burger becomes unwieldy and impractical. Sure it looks nice, but try eating a burger that is taller than it is wide. I value edibility above everything else

Touche. However, there are times when it is appropriate, even desired, to smash one's face into a steaming pile of grease with no care toward the propensity of its hand-heldedness. Pure gorging glory. There is a time and a place, to state, if it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face!

Not to criticize but did you use disappearing hamburger for those buns?
70/30 is a no no unless you make the patty twice the size of the bun before grilling.

I can say without a doubt, that the Franchised Fatburger locations have left me pretty dissatisfied when i've expected it to be like the original.
I've been to the fatburger in Las Vegas, Irvine, and South Central, and each time i've left almost shocked by the drop in quality.
But the original location, the entire reason behind the expansion, is pretty much rool:

I don't have enough experience with alternate Fatburger locations to make such a conclusive statement. However, I must give the nod to TheCow re: his contest of the theory that none but the Original Tommy's can do what they do.
Quote:
TheCow said:
I have to totally disagree with you on the Tommys burger thing. Ive been to the original numerous times, and to the other random ones, and really I found no difference.
What I will say, is that the original Original Tommy's at the intersection of Bevery and Rampart in downtown Los Angeles (2575 W. Beverly Blvd.), is typically a safer bet than the outside locations for one reason: volume. They move so many burgers, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, that you'd be hard pressed to find a stale bun or not-so-fresh fries. At other locations (Eagle Rock comes to mind), you do run the risk of hitting a stale bun or old fries every now and again in the off hour. But generally speaking, I believe that Tommy's offers consistent quality from restaurant to restaurant.
Anyone else have favorites they care to contribute? Please note an address if you do, so we can come visit too!

Heres one of my favorite local burger chains.
http://www.nationsrestaurants.com/index.html
Theyve been in the bay since 1952.
They started out as these really small dinky roadside burger joints.
(Today this nations in the pic is a different burger spot. Phila Burger, The philidelphia burger station)
I love this place it reminds me of childhood. Nations is the 3am munchies spot. The 5am, after trip, coffee and full breakfast spot. And the spot to go when you have the random uncontrollable craving for Nations Awesome PIE!!!!
I grew up on this shit man. The pie is ingrained in my memory for life.

Pal's , this guy started with Ray Kroc who started McDonald's. He stayed true to what a hamburger should be. All of the restaurant's look like the opening page except for the original ones. If you are ever driving through East TN be sure and get a Pal Burger with A Frenchie Fry you won't be disappointed.

I'm going to do up a bacon cheeseburger (cheddar cheese) with onions, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. Maybe some jalapenos on there as well

Them's some fat burgers there Steiner. To my dismay, your images are not locally hosted - FOR SHAME! However, having feasted on much Chinese food, French bread, and dry cured pork loin (Spanish lomo), I am in a forgiving mood.
Quite the bonus, yesterday I had breakfast with my fairer half at iHOP (International House of Pancakes)... and their Bacon Avocado Cheddar Cheeseburger ain't half bad. Matter o' fact, it was goddamn delicious. I'm generally in no hurry to go to IHOP, typically restricting myself to their country fried steak 'n gravy, mashed taters and onion rings; but this adventure onto their burger menu left me extremely satisfied. On the downside, I didn't tote my digi along for the gorging.
snoot - ground sirloin... chuck... shoulder... it's all good. I sometimes pick whatever whole cut is on special and request the butcher to grind it for me then and there. It often works out to be cheaper than the store's pre-ground stuff, and makes me feel all cool like, gettin' the butcher to do my biddings and all!
And while not quite a burger, this bacon cheeseburger meatloaf is surely a treat. I hope to get around to relating the recipe in a seperate thread soon...

Holy moley! Been a while since I had a meatloaf.
I like leftover meatloaf sammiches on toast and drowned in ketchup and eaten with a fork.

The best burgers in LA can be found at Tonys Liquor on Ventura Blvd..
Its a liqueur that has a grill going during lunch hours..
Good fries and tacos/burritos. Chicken sandwiches are great, just good grill food..
The burgers though are off the hook. Order a double with bacon and the guy pulls off a hunk of ground beef and puts it on the scale till it reaches 4 ounces (2X) then hand forms a patty and throws it on the grill. Bacon goes into the deep fryer while another guy gets the buns ready with everything thats good. Cheese goes on, the bacon drains and then is added and everything comes together to make the best burger in LA.
Jimmy Deans is a place here in Santa Clarita and its great.. Just damn great food.

There's a Jimmy Dean close to me in Sunland that I've been meaning to check out. Every time I drive by I get a whiff of grilled cow soon as I round the corner on the block, witnessing the white plumes of smoke billowing from their stack.
It's been on my list, but unfortunately it seems my appetite has failed me each time I've been out that way.
Stein - I would've called you crazy a couple years ago about your meatloaf sammy... but my ladyfriend insisted I try it when she pulled one together with some leftover loaf a few months ago and there's no lookin' back - it's a good combination to be sure!

Cheddar Jalapeno meatloaf sammy..
Recipe is as follows.
Meatloaf, Jalapeno, Cheddar cheese (cheese and peppers mixed in and then baked)...
Cool, then slice and fry like spam with a slice of american cheese, serve on a bun with lettuce, tomato and pickle..
Yah, meatloaf sammys are great. Used to make a few dozen of these at a deli I worked at years ago.
Jimmy Deans has good burgers.. I wouldnt call them great. The fries are pretty good too.. Their chicken sandwiches are the best of anywhere. MUCH better than, well THE BEST!
Anyone who knocks a hand formed patty made from good fresh ground beef, grilled and served with fresh produce and a toasted bun has no clue about burgers.

Well I'm pretty damn sure no one here will know about Swenson's as there is only 5 of them in the world, and they are all in Ohio. Its just your typical drive in burger joint, everything homemade, fresh and delicious. I have known people that worked there and they put brown sugar in the beef and my god its amazing.
They have this burger called the galley boy. It's a double burger with these 2 special sauces, one is mayo based with sweet relish, and the other is a mix of a bunch of sauces and spices. Now that is probably the best burger I have ever had. My friend who lives out in California told me when he came to visit that every one out there had some different favorite place for burgers. He said he tried most of them and they all made him long for a Swenson's galley boy.
Well if any of you burger lovers ever find yourself in northeast Ohio, track down a Swenson's and enjoy America's best burger!

oh yes, america has all the best worst food :-D
being the broke college student that I am - i rarely get to venture out to enjoy burgers such as the ones mentioned in this thread. However - I have my own favorite i make at home.
It's nothing special - 1/2lb patty, 5 strips of bacon, pepperjack cheese, pizza seasoning, and crushed pepper. buttered & toasted bun, of course.
But mmmm do i love it :0)

In my most humble opinion, a nearly perfect hamburger.

To be within the graces of its odor is enough to make a grown man howl. Holding in one's hands, the warmth of the seared steaming beef patty emboldens his hunger. Clenching jaws around its soft buns, crunching and chewing deliciously garnished flesh into ecstasy.
Behold!

[a travisty to be sure: there is no cheese on this particular burger] edit: here's the fat cheese

I regret never getting the burger when I went. I was really dumb and got the country fried steak, which I dont think was very good.
Luckily I had been to Amada so I had a good sense of the chef's food. If you're in Philly have you ever tried a pasta from Marc Vetri?

Don't get the chef's tasting because there's a good chance you'll miss out on his best dishes (trust me i've been there multiple times).
You must try the Almond Tortellini an Asparagus Flan.

The first time I went to Morimoto, my brother got the Waygu steak with fries cooked on "Kobe" fat. He said they were the best thing he's ever eaten.

We've got a few specialty burger joints in my neighbourhood, and although they are pretty good and have their own select toppings, they are waaay overpriced - 12-18$ cdn. for essentially a fast food style burger. :0
I agree, fatburger is great, one of my favorites as far as franchises go.

Shit how did I miss this thread?

I think that at the present moment, my favorite burger is from Fatburger, specifically a Fat Cheese with Egg. Wish I had a picture of one, but in keeping with the original post, I have this from one of my hundreds of trips to In-n-Out made in the Fall of 2005..."
No burger bashing here, this is a thread for lovers of the burger indiscriminate!
Holy shit how true this is. Bolded for emphasis.
I LOVE me some In n Out.. double double animal style no lettuce w/ chiles and extra salt (gotta add the chiles) But again.. you HAVE to be in the mood for it. Every once in a while it hits me "GODDAMN I NEED SOME IN N OUT LIKE RIGHT NAO" But other times it just seems like meh.
You really do need to be craving it. Then it tastes 1000x better.
As far as burger joints in my area go... I definitely put HABIT up there near the top.
My number one top burger joint for the past five+ years however.. the reigning champion...
Fucking UMAMI BURGER - A Japanese owned chain.. I'm sure you've heard of them?
Behold the Manly Burger:
house beer-cheddar cheese, bacon lardons, smoked-salt onion strings, Umami ketchup, mustard spread
I can't eat anything else every time I go there. It's like fucking crack.
Again... you need to be IN THE MOOD for it, for best results. But when the mood strikes... holy fucking shit. It's a flavor orgasm. It's so good it should be illegal. Definitely not something you want to break a fast with. You might go into shock from the richness.
Their other burgers are fucking amazing too. But I can't get enough Manly Burger. When I have that craving... it satisfies it to the BONE. I always leave Umami burger with that high-as-fuck-on-food feeling

Holy shit, that is a serious plate!
Shroomism, Habit is all good for sure, love that their burgers have a genuine smokey char-grilled flavor, something that you don't really get from a planche-grilled In-n-Out burg (I'm with ya all the way on the chilis, although I typically prefer them whole on the side, as opposed to cut up into the burger itself).
Umami Burger is definitely a quality joint, kinda in its own league since their burger combos will run ya nigh upon $20 after tax and tip. Bonus that they serve beer! The Manly and the Hatch are my two fav's.
Bacon burgers (like 50/50 patties) done right are pretty phenomenal. I might have posted this earlier in this thread - definitely have posted it somewhere on the site since it's in my gallery - but here it is again in all its glory. From a local fancy pants burger joint called Eden Burger, their skinny truffle fries are also rather epic, and they have an excellent beer list so long as you're willing to fork over the cash.
