The Mars Volta
    #6529093 -

After a wonderful night of dark star orchestra I found myself very high on what I believe was AMT (was given to me as L but definitely was not!) Anyways, I made my way from a very overwhelming afterparty to my house. A good friend armed me with his ipod so I decided to give The Mars Volta a shot.
I listened to De-Loused in The Comatorium.
OMG...I have been missing out. This band is so beautifully amazing. It blew my mind.

Especially the song Cicatriz E.S.P.
These guys are brilliant!!!

The lead singer channels Bjorks' sound really well.

Well I heard so much about them, and I assumed from what I heard they would be amazing. But then I heard a couple of songs and I wasn't very impressed.

I suppose I should give them a better chance and listen to a whole CD from beginning to end.

I have Only heard two The Mars Volta songs that I know of.
On both songs he sounded exactly like Bjork.

I may be partially deaf though.

Mars Volta is the most over rated band ever. De-loused is alright, the others are no good. They just don't make sense. Ever heard them live? It's a train wreck. It's clear that certain songs on their albums are made to be played in a certain order, and they don't do it live. Plus it's just, bad, couldn't make out melody or beat, or even vocals half the time. I used to love them, but as I've grown I've realized there's just better stuff out there. Oh how I wish At the Drive In would come back.

There he goes...
One of God's own prototypes.
A high powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production.
Too weird to live and too rare to die.

i can't even tell you how much i dislike this band... just believe, it's a lot.

i was hanging out with this girl in CO that really liked them... so, I would try and listen to their CDs all the time, and since honesty is the best policy would tell her how much i disliked them.  They came to denver and she got tickets and I agreed to go.. since she swore i would like them better in person..

I walked out of the show... i couldn't take it... terrible, over-the-top type performance... yelling into the mike... way too much, "we're awesome" type talk.... basically acting way more like rock-stars than I believe they really are...

not too mention that I don't even think they were playing their own songs right...

it was terrible... i spent the night outside in the smoking area w/ a few other disgruntled-dragged-alongs...

The Mars Volta are a group who lucked out, managed to snag a small following, and suddenly wound up thinking they were rockstars. They try too damn hard to be something they're not terribly good at being, and they wind up coming off as over-eager and under-skilled.

Their music annoys me, primarily because what could have been acceptable instrumental work is completely ruined by overly-ambitious vocals and an incessant parade of failed attempts to be weird for the sake of being weird.

Thank god some people agree with me. Unfortunately they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, so I saw their live show, while I kind of liked them before, no longer. Man I wish I got to see the Gnarls Barkley/RHCP show sooooooooooo much more.

couldn't agree more.

I started listening to De-Loused and got kinda into them. And I was reading all of this stuff about how they were so incredible live, and listening to that album, you can see how they could be awesome.

But when you actually go see them, you realize they are one of the worst live bands ever. They musta just had one helluva hype machine.

ugh.

I actually saw TMV live...and I had only heard one of their singles at the time. They were touring with A Perfect Circle.

I thought they had a decent amount of potential, but the set just DRAGGED on. I'm sure it would have helped if I was high at the time, but oh well. Anyways, they walked off of the stage early because the crowd was starting to give them trouble. Some of the band members were about to jump into the crowd and lay down the law, lol.

What was interesting is that when I showed up for the show about 6 hours early, I saw some tour buses near one of the back entrances. It turns out that a few of the band members were racing RC cars and flying a kite out in the arena parking lot, lol. I didn't even know it was them until I saw them onstage. I walked right by because I thought they were roadies for APC. I was going to ask if they had seen Maynard or something, but I'm glad I didn't.

:rofl2: :rofl2: :rofl2:

I'll give them another shot sometime IF I have the chance. I'm somewhat thankful that even though I'm not a 100% fan of them, that they at least try to play something original and "out in left field".

Sorry, that distinction goes to Radiohead. Easily.

The Rolling Stones easily fall into this category as well.

De-Loused felt like a story to me. Granted I was pretty deep in the psychedelic realm, I thought they did a great job of taking me where they wanted me to go. Some bands are better in the studio, some bands are better live, what are you gonna do?
