Just saw them live again, and all I can say is wow!
Danced my ass off for a solid 2.5 hours, and loved every second of it. Their set was flawless and all their new material ( unreleased stuff ) is really good too.

I like them, but I have been disappointed in their live performances

I've seen them twice and I know exactly what you mean. You just have to catch em at the right time apparently. Now I won't say the first time I saw them I was dissappointed but there could've been more.
This time it was balls to the wall amazing, the band was flawless, all their jam outs were on, and there wasn't any of that ambience where you can tell they don't really know where to go with it. I'd definately have to say they are coming along great as a musical band, and they will probably continue to impress.

Pridgen their drummer? That kid is sick, I would go see them just for him, even though I'm not a fan at all. Maybe if they played just De-Loused as a set I would be pumped.

Every album has been better? De-Loused is the only album I'll ever even consider giving the time of day, and I think even most TMV fans agree De-Loused is their best work.

Amputechture was fucking great, sorry you didn't like it. Theodore was faded back in the mix and on his way out of the band so that cost, but the album is essential Volta.

Do you think Deloused has the best songwriting or that it's the best produced/sounding because it has Rick Rubin? If you think it has the best songwriting then you probably also think Acrobatic Tenement is the best ATDI record, or that Led Zeppelin I is better than Houses of the Holy, or that Santanas first release is better than Caravanserai. Get real dude. Wouldn't you expect a great band to progress and get better with each release?
Quote:

See the thing about records, especially from a band like TMV, is that you acutally have to "give them the time of day" in order to realize why it's great shit, buuuuut I'm sure you already knew that. So I'm not surprised you don't care about anything past Deloused. Deloused is a one listen click, the material is still awesome but less challenging than anything after it. Frances definitely took a few listens and Amputechture a few more than that. Bedlam is just fucking nuts.

Yes, I would expect a great band to get better with each release. Unfortunately The Mars Volta is far from a great band. I think De-Loused is their best album, I don't know what's so fucking hard to understand about that, and the only album I like to boot.
And don't fucking talk to me about complex music or any of that bullshit. I've given their other stuff a fair chance and to be honest it's really fucking annoying. They come off as pretentious in their music, and their live show is a joke (I didn't want to do any of this because I wasn't completely trying to thread jack or rain on Vandago's parade.)
I'm sorry you think something is great and I don't, do me a favor and look up subjective on dictionary.com, and while you're at it go fuck yourself.

Oooh, you're so edgy. You know, this is the kind of argument where I could be driving around in my car a year later listening to Deloused and say, "Damnit that son of a bitch on the internet was right, this is their best fucking album.", so don't take the whole thing too seriously. Currently, Bedlam is my favorite, do you seriously not like the Aberinkula/Metatron suite if nothing else? Ileyna? Oh wait nevermind, you haven't listened to the album.
People who accuse something of being "pretentious" are the most pretentious people there are. I'll give you that some of their shit is very annoying though. Like the 20 minute funk band sound check in the middle of Cassandra Gemini, what the fuck is that?

I didn't accuse them of being pretentious, I said their music comes off as pretentious. I also am not the one who was so quick to get defensive.
What I don't like is when you try and talk to me like I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about. That complexity thing is bullshit. First off, that doesn't make good music. Secondly, you don't even know a fraction of what I listen to. Check out Interstellar Space, or some Sun Ra, or Joshua Redman's Elastic Band, and then tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. It's not that I care whether you like more of the Volta than just De-Loused, but I care when people act like stupid assholes about them, which seems to happen more often with TMV fans than any other band.

Ive read enough of your posts to you know you like some good shit, that's why I ribbed you on the complexity thing, it was a good angle to make the discussion more entertaining. Let's not forget that a subjective argument about music on the internet is just that, and it doesn't make good sense for me to flatline every point with the admission that it's just my opinion so it's not actually "correct". That's no fun.
I don't get defensive about having my opinion disagreed with. If it seems that way it's just because I'm trying to inject some liveliness into the discussion, instead of just resting everything on the caveat of subjectivity. And I agree that many TMV admirers come across as jackasses but let's face it, we're all anonymites arguing on the internet. We're all jackasses.

I recommend fast-forwarding from about 7 minutes in to the last track to about the last five. Though that middle section might work well for putting you to sleep.

There's so many people on different sides of the fence when it comes to TMV. I wonder if people were like that at all with pink floyd or rush when they came out? Something in me wants TMV to still be very popular 50 years down the road

I don't know the fuck your talking about. The volta is the shit! I like everything they've put out. Amputechure was plain insanity. Three doses later I still can't make sense of it. I haven't seen the Volta live yet but that's on my list of things to do this summer. I have no doubt their show would be mind blowing.
But I still don't why your being an asshole when talking about music...? What makes your opinion good? And what makes a true volta van? Am I not a true volta fan because I fucking love Amputechure(as all their shit) and have never seen them live?

I never called anyone a true Volta fan, and if I did I meant it in the sense that I am not a fan. I find that most people like De-Loused the most. Obviously people will disagree. I wasn't the one to be a dick first, either. In fact my first two posts said nothing rude about the band at all.
As for their live performance: I've seen them once. I contemplated going to see them a second time this year in Columbus, but it was sold out (and apparently they have yet to actually play.) It left a lot to be desired. Far to space-jammy (I don't mean the movie) for me, and I find Cedric's voice annoying, even grating at times.

What a loaded statement coming from a person who admittedly hasn't even heard all their albums.
De-Loused is their most sophomoric release. Everything about it, compared to their following releases, is amateurish sounding. Even Cedric's voice changes with the progression of albums and with every album released his voice becomes an even more integral part of the music. Everything about every release seems to get more complex and intricate.
My favorite album by far is Amputechture. Listen to Day of the Baphomets if you want to hear what Mars Volta is REALLY about.
I'm seeing them play on Sunday night and cannot fucking wait.

Guess I didn't make it clear enough that I've listened to all of their work, so I'll state it plainly.
I've listened to all their albums. I remember checking the record stores for a while after De-Loused to see if they had any new material. (I didn't know when it came out since I heard it from a friend, but he must have gotten it right when it came out because I remember looking for over a year.)
Yes, saying "Most" was an overstatement, but I have found that's the most commonly accepted release. Maybe because it's more accessible (or sophomoric as you put it.)

Man, can't believe I missed this thread! Yeah the volta is my favorite band atm. I do agree that De-loused is their best complete album but I think all of their best songs and moments reside on newer albums. I fucking love their vibe though, it's like this psychedelic horrific biblical mexican vibe all while playing heavy as shit music. That's how I would describe it, anyways
If you don't like it, I can definitely see that, but I can't get enough volta. I love em for exactly what they are.
