I hate it when people say that Cynic has jazz/fusion elements, like that somehow elevates their sophistication above other metal bands. Cynic has absolutely NO jazz in it. Neither does Mars Volta for that matter.

Cynic maybe sounds like Mars Volta, except for the bad robo vocals.

Having listened to a couple Cynic songs on YouTube since reading OP, I have to conclude the Volta are way more musically talented, but I am digging Cynic's style.

Volta does.  You can hear it on tracks like Cassandra Gemini, all over Amputechture; Aberinkula, Askepios, Agadez, Soothsayer, and other bits and grooves scattered throughout.
