Peruvian Torch Growth Question
    #6514586 -

I'm a little bit curious about peruvian torch. They say that it can grow on average of about one foot per year... If that cactus has an "arm" or two growing off of it (sorry, my cacti vocabulary isn't too precise) does each "arm" grow a foot? Or is it typical that about a foot of growth is spread across each part of the plant?

I guess what I'm getting at: is it beneficial to wait until the plants are quite large (and have multiple "arms") before making some ethno-voyage cuts on them. :-)

No, if there's 2 arms the growth will be divided. It might be a little more growth than you'd get from one branch, I'm not sure. But it won't be 2 feet if you'd only get one foot had it been a single branch.

If you want 1 foot of growth a year you have to live in a warm and sunny country. Mine grow only 4-6 inch a year. (in NL)

To be honest, none of mine have branches (branching is relatively rare in the trich family), but I do have a lot of cacti that are all springing from a single stump. For example, I have one stump that sprouted 3 pups, those grew and I cut them. Those stumps grew 3 and 4 pups each for a total of 11. I know this isn't branching but all 11 stalks have been growing at least 14" a year. This is a pedro, though. Oh, and I'm on the mid-east coast.

Anyway, if you want to harvest them just save the tips and stumps, you might be waiting a while for branches.

It gets decently hot/sunny during the summer here. (Southern US)
Not perfectly climate. Get's a little cold in the winter, but it's not real bad. It's not dropped below 30 yet this year.

How much do you let a cactus grow before you harvest some for a trip? I hear you need about a foot of cactus to get a decent trip, but I'd be worried if I harvest a foot too soon I might kill the cactus.

once well established, (mature size and at least 6inches tall and 3-4 inches diameter) they will definitely grow upward of a foot per growing season.
As long as your giving them plenty of sun and proper conditions(pretty easy to attain).

As will pachonoi.
For harvest, leave a good amount or healthy cactus behind, it will pup and continue growing.

yeah so I you have cacti that are a few years old and are growing a foot a year or more then if you had 365 of them you could trip everyday :-).

At least 2 areoles ( where the spines come out ) left above the soil. Cut them at a 30-45 degree angle. This is so that when they're outside and they get rained on, water will not pool on the stumps causing mold and/ or rot.

Because diameters vary, 1 pound of fresh pachanoi is a good starting dose.

The only legitimate shaman I ever met in person said to use a chunk that's the length of your fore-arm from elbow to knuckles. This is usually at Least a pound.

Why pachanoi as opposed to Peruvian Torch?

Peruvianus cuttings are quite variable. Not just as the alkaloid content of any cactus is, but because of the types of cacti being sold as well. The majority of US vendors might sell you something that is less than ideal for the purposes mentioned in this thread...

And, to some, the majority of peruvianus specimens are believed to resemble t. macrogonus (which largely resembles the 'peruvianus' used for potent dry skin in peru, much more so than...) and t. cuzcoensis which is widely considered bunk.

Unless you don't plan on eating, and only growing to look at it or add to the collection, I'd avoid supposed t. peruvianus from vendors, and stick with pachanoi and bridgesii.

I was at my local green house yesterday and they had one 7 foot tall cactus simply labeled "Peruvianus". It looked just like the trichocereus but of course no one in the place could give me any details. I am by no means a cacti expert; so I was wondering if there's any other cactus species with peruvian in the name? particularly ones with an uncanny resemblance to a trich.

This thing costs around $250 but it is so damn sexy.

the most likely culprit is Cereus peruvians

That was the only thing that came to mind but this thing had big fat ribs, not like the thin/ skinny ribs of a cereus.

I think this thing is legit....but I've honestly never seen a Peruvian this tall in person; even when I was in Peru.

If this thing is still there when my tax return gets here, I may have to scoop it up. The price seems fitting.

Yeah, but assuming you go with one from bouncingbear or one of the other online stores it seems like it'd be a safe bet it's the real deal... wouldn't it?

Okay... Are you coming from experience with bouncingbear? I'm kind of confused. Do you believe that their macrogonus has more mescaline than their Trichocereus peruvianus? Is this because of their specific genetic stock?
