Carbon Dioxide, yeast, convection and other issues (Grow Log -and Demise!-)
    #6488787 -

In a 3 cubic metre area how much CO2 will be required? Will anyone who can use Imperial measurements and metric please let me know (I'm going for yeast fermentation for my box)? My current calculations suggest a 5 litre bottle inoculated with yeast and fueled by 1lb of sugar a week will be required (I doubt it's too much, however experienced voices will be welcomed).

I'm pushing the envelope a little siting the 200w frost protector where I have but it's stable and secure and no "bar fire" and seems o.k. Sited there it pushes warm air out of the louvered vent in the top of the door and sucks it up from the vent a the bottom (I'm hoping to run a purely convecting system with the addition of some CO2).

The first of the babies today.

The second.

Hhhhm gonna have some advice on use of fabrics for you guys after this (like get it cut for you and staple to the outer door frame from the inside-try it you'll get it-).

well...
just supply fresh air
plenty of carbon dioxide in that

if you really want the yeast method I suggest using brewers yeast and corn sugar. and use an airlock on your fermentation vessel.

Are there any problems associated with overdosing and what are the indications?

If your gonna have good venting you don't need the co2. Co2 is use Mostly in enclose rooms nowadays. For people that run dehumidifiers and can't vent. Take a look at pics of the major breeders grow rooms there pretty to find. Not one of them has co2 added.

Hhmm I'm a little concerned that they won't get enough. You think my pennies would be better spent on bigger vents heh (I was looking at some today)? Are there any CO2 users out there?

like the others said, if u vent your room then u dont really need Co2, i never considered it anyway.
your pennies are better spent on some hardcore lighting

The kit is not expensive guys (like I'm poor coz' I've got the lighting ! Another shade will be added as soon as). All you need is a 5l spring water bottle a 1l spring water bottle, a jam jar, a length of hose, 1lb of sugar, some live yeast and some syphon-bonding tape (the most expensive item at £4.99 !). So no hassle I just figure if they need more and you can give it why not?

Or you can use these....

""With this package of CO2 Tabs you will possess a revolutionary new and very powerful product aimed at plants on any growth medium. These simple - and cheap! - Tablets are specially developed to replace the complicated and expensive CO2 fertilizing systems used until today. Growth stagnation of plants is often caused by a shortage of carbondioxide; in badly aired spaces this shortage can be dramatic. With CO2 Tabs you can offer the carbon dioxide directly to the roots of your plants and significantly increase the speed of growth.

Only healthy plants will be able to effectively use this extra input. During extensive testing we perceived as the possible side affect a shortage of magnesium due to the high speed of growth. To effectively prevent this we have added 1.2% magnesium sulfate. The tabs release the CO2 in the water and thus stimulate the growth. Healthy plants can absorb many times more of this important nutrient CO2 as is available in the air.

Attention: Adding CO2 short before the dark period doesn't give any results! During the dark period the plant doesn't absorb any CO2. The tabs bond the CO2 about 4 to 6 hours to the offered water.

Application: When your plants (or cuttings) are healthy you can use 1 tablet per 250 liters of water. In hydro systems you can also simply add the tablet to the barrel. Overdosing is neither harmful nor useful. If you want to add the CO2Tab instantly, first solve it in a cup of water (gently crush the tablet with your finger in the water) and mix it the with the water that is intended for the plants. Apply twice weekly for optimal results, and preferably during the whole growing cycle of your plants.

The use of CO2-Tabs is environmentally friendly and poses no harm for plants, pets, birds, insects or microorganisms. Adding CO2 Tabs to the drinking water can temporarily lower the pH. It is advisable to regularly measure the pH (of water and soil). High or low extremes interfere with the plants ability takes up nutrients. Use Bacterial to recycle the extra waste (a result of the increased growth) into nutrients. CO2 Tabs and Bacterial are an ideal combination for your plants."

I know the exposure is not good (I can frame a shot I just can't create one -yet-, if you see what I mean). Anyway I'm hoping to solve the difficulty with watering in such a cramped space by using a can with a hose banded on* which I insert through the soil to the perlite at the bottom -you may be able to see the dummy tubes protruding, these will allow me to break the soil in the same way every day-. As my seeds are non-femmed and they won't be vegged forever I've stuck some -mostly "foriegn"- extras in, just to make up the numbers, in smaller pots.

*Which was (you may be pleased to hear judging from the reaction I got) the hose I was going to use for the CO2, having increased the venting.

Everyone wants to sell you on something. I say if you really wanna make one go big, if at all. Five gallon bucket style. Couple pounds of sugar and a good yeast.
But as other wise people have stated. With good air flow everthing is fine without Co2. It's when air is recirculated and gets stale, thats when you have problems.

"Hi Corp!"
Oh sh*t, oh Cr*p, oh Silverwolf you spannered Ars*hole!!!! OOOOh Crap! Oh ....."S "Mr Horticulture" says do 'em in fyba, protect the roots, only gonna transplant once, minimise shock." So he carefully cuts the fyba pot rings in half* to allow swifter root growth and the probable removal of the remaining fyba once potted up, he neglects to cut the bottoms off as he had intended and succeeds in stunting the root development. Add to this the moisture retentive qualities of "John Innes", not quite enough airflow, and ballsey fluros and I have killed one. I will definitely use cactus compost for germination and pre-growth in future. The upshot is that I am a week or more behind schedule and risking male pre-dominance because of early growth root restriction, bugger!!!! Still nine out of ten ain't bad and I've got them in all organic with 20-30% perlite, I have cut the vents to give a full airflow and situated an "Ultra-Quiet" computer fan in the door behind the bottom louvre. I have infact made a C02 kit (I bought a lot of hose) but that's been kinda "something to do" as-well, still if I give 'em some plus some pure Organic Liquid Seaweed now I might be able to make up some time. Oh b*llocks OOOh sh**..........................

*Method: hold seedling in one hand in fyba pot, cut ring in two places and remove bottom and without touching roots place seedling in pre-prepared hole in compost of larger pot made by placing a soil filled fyba in larger pot whilst filling it.

It gets better... (he said components of said vehicle now decorating the public highway)..."S" miscalculates grow room size (finding a touch -to 0.05 of a meter- over half a metre square as 0.8 of a metre square) and sticks almost exactly double the necessary flouro wattage over them aswell, but hey the first recorded case of dwarfism caused by flouros (and over-wet slightly restricted seedling growth fueled by insufficient airflow). My word to the wise? If using ballsey flouros be sure you ain't either gonna overheat them and/or fail to ensure adequate airflow for the amount of power you are using. On the plus side guys I now know -after three weeks of set up on my first private grow- what most of the problems were and how to solve them adequately and that I do should have enough "all-flouro" firepower to do the seeds justice (high temperature loving Indica crosses*). I spent £10 on the seed so what's the odds? I'm more upset about the power wastage!

P.S Getting yeast to ferment shouldn't be difficult should it? Mine hasn't!

*Bottom feeders!

P.P.S There's something about mylar I don't like.
