Yeast cultures
    #5414112 - 03/17/06 06:00 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

So, If I have a liquid culture of yeast going in a receptacle with sugar and water, can i take a few oz out of that (after 7 or so days) and put it into a new receptacle with new water and sugar to keep my colonies alive and going? It seems like this is pretty logical. I used 1/2 package of yeast per bottle...Its times like this i owned a spec...

Lol...yea this is how they 'breed' yeast just keep adding a bit more sugar and water to keep it going. Just wondering, what you doing with the yeast? Bread? Beer? Or something more exciting?!

Yes, in principle this works, in practice it is important to add yeast nutrients to prevent the live yeast from living off the dead yeast.

Adding 5ml of any concentrated liquid "complete" plantfood to a liter of sugar water ought to be sufficient to keep the yeast happy.

I'm guessing that you're trying to breed a "vintage" yeast from one of your favorite beers/wines to producer quantities for home brewing, am I right?

Yeast nutrient needs b vitamins. I was in prison for awhile for weed and
we used to make alcohol out of marmite, sugar and crushed vitamin b tablets and orange juice. Marmite contains yeast and b vitamins so just disolve some in hot water and sugar (add some b vitamins if u have em) and wait for it to cool. It works. Promise.

On the subject of homebrewing, i make beer and fruit wine in my grow room. Not only is it a nice warm place to do this but the plants love the extra co2 it produces!!!

If you are trying to nurture a vintage yeast, then DON'T add marmite. This will contaminate your current yeast. Just use B vitamins.

Yea man, my orange hooch was the best!! If you add more sugar every few days then it can get really strong. The only time i ever tried heroin was in prison as there was no hash around at the time!! Quite ironic i think!! lol

Thanks, I am very familiar with culturing bacteria, and i thought that yeast would behave similarly.
