Can we get this soon?

I have alot of places I'd like to visit before I die.

If it is life that you feel you are missing I can tell you where to find it.  In the law courts, in business, in government.  There is nothing occurring in the streets. Nothing but a dumbshow composed of the helpless and the impotent.    -Cormac MacCarthy

You dont need faster than light travel to tour the galaxy before you die.  Nature has a built in mechanism that would allow you to traverse the entire galaxy in your life time, time dilation.  Just get sufficiently close to the speed of light and you'll be fine.

Quote:
Fusion-powered starships should be able to reach speeds of approximately 10 percent of that of light. Light sails powered by massive lasers could potentially reach similar or greater speeds. Finally, if energy resources and efficient production methods are found to make antimatter in the quantities required, theoretically it would be possible to reach speeds near that of light, where time dilation would shorten perceived trip times for the travelers considerably. Even given the assumption of 10 percent of light speed, this would be enough to reach Alpha Centauri in forty years, only half a present human lifetime.

No, I dont mean .10 c.

or even .50 c.

I really want like, 10X C.

There has to be some way to do this. Maybe a gravity wave surfboard.

Are the effects of gravity instantaneous? Or do they just move at an extremely fast speed? I know the effects move FTL, which posits that the transmission of information FTL is possible. So I would think there has to be some possibility of moving things around this way.

Obviously we're talking far, far into the future. But its an intriguing possiblity.

The affects aren't instantaneous, but they travel at the speed of light.

Once, men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free.
But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.

I was under the impression gravitational effects traveled FASTER than light.

Is this wrong?

Yes, the current "accepted" belief is the effects of gravity travel at the speed of light. In fact all forces act at the speed of light. As of yet though, gravity waves or gravitons have not been detected.

I just did some reading on the subject. Thats very interesting. Granted, I'm no astronomer, but I had always thought the situation was as I described above. I'm not sure why...

The experiment in the paper I read was very clever too.
