Centrifical force of the earth's rotation, v.s gravity

basically, anything spinning will have centrifical force, right?

well the earth is spinning one rotation in a day (23,000 miles??)

what sort of effect will this have on gravity, and what sort of complicated mathematical/physics formula would call this measurment into action?

Well it's not exactly hard physics, just a lot of calculating.

First we'll find the centripetal force of, well, me.

F = m * (V^2 / r)

So...

F = 55 * (215139.6 / 6378100)
F = 1.855 N

Of course thats at the equator. You can get fancy and try to figure it out for your latitude, but I'm lazy and don't feel like doing that now :smirk:

You could get really fancy and start figuring out the centripetal force due to the Earth going round the sun...or the force caused by the galaxy's motion :wink:

I recall my physics teacher (who looked just like Stephen Colbert :lol:) saying there's no such thing as centrifugal force, only centripetal.  I completely forget his reasoning but I remember him being right.  What value that adds to this post I don't know, but do with it what you will...  :what:

The basic difference between centripetal and centrifugal is centripetal means "center seeking" and centrifugal means "center fleeing".  So one force is the force pulling you to the center (center of the earth via gravity) and one is the force pulling you away from the earth, which doesnt exist because there is nothing pulling you away from the earth.  Thus there is no centrifugal force.

But things do feel a "pull" away from the center when rotating (ever ridden the gravitron? fun).  This effect is a combination of the centripetal force pulling you to the center, and you inertia wanting to keep you in a straight line.  The combination of inertia and the centripetal force is felt as the fictitious force know as centrifical or centrifugal.

Hmm the direction centripetal force from the rotation around the sun and around the galactic center would rotate as the earth rotated.  I guess the net effect would be zero over a period of time, interesting    :rocket:

Your physics teacher is correct. "Centrifugal force" is actually the lack of centripital force... it doesn't really exist.

Imagine a car going around a curve with a small object sitting on top of the car (ignoring air). As the car goes around the curve, centripital force acts on the car, holding the car to the curve of the road. If there is not much friction between the object and the car, then the centripital force acting on the object will not be enough to keep it in the same motion as the car. The object will appear to slide off the car. However, if you look at it from above, the object will have continued in a straight line and the car will have moved out from under the object as it follows the curve of the road.
