WOW!

Team Cracks Century-Old Math Puzzle

The Associated Press

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- An international team of mathematicians says it has cracked a 120-year-old puzzle that researchers say is so complicated that its handwritten solution would cover the island of Manhattan.

The 18-member group of mathematicians and computer scientists was convened by the American Institute of Mathematics in Palo Alto to map a theoretical object known as the "Lie group E8."

Lie (pronounced Lee) groups were invented by 19th-century Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie in his study of symmetrical objects, especially spheres, and differential calculus.

The E8 group, which dates to 1887, is the most complicated Lie group, with 248 dimensions, and was long considered impossible to solve.

"To say what precisely it is is something even many mathematicians can't understand," said Jeffrey Adams, the project's leader and a math professor at the University of Maryland.

The problem's proof, announced Monday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, took the researchers four years to find. It involves about 60 times as much data as the Human Genome Project.

When stored in highly compressed form on a computer hard drive, the solution takes up as much space as 45 days of continuous music in MP3 format.

"It's like a Mount Everest of mathematical structures they've climbed now," said Brian Conrey, director of the institute.

The calculation does not have any obvious practical applications but could help advance theoretical physics and geometry, researchers said.

..............

"MAN! You know there aint no such thing as left over crack!"

I read that shit yesterday all I have to say is damn!!! I think the quest for the never ending question of how or why we are here and the purpose of our being will never be answered and I hate how when an acheivment like this is completed they are only filled w/ more questions. Now they have the answer what are they going to do w/ it?

i really dont understand how a mathematical equation to draw a 248 dimension graph could really help us answer ANY question, other than how to draw a 248 dimensional graph...

definitely not where, or how the world came to be, our purpose, or any other shit like that...

peace

This has applications in String theory dude...

But other than that I for one appreciate this... Symmetric motion rulez!

Great. This has been keeping me awake for years.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. The article doesn't mention string theory...

My point being is why put so much energy and effert not to mention money into something that may not help mankind at all?

Same reason we spend billions on movies, fashion, art, drugs and restaurants?

Anyway, I do think it is helpful to mankind. Pure math and science research are helpful to mankind, even if we cannot immediately see the applications.

Ask any physicists the relevancy of Lie groups in theoretical physics.

As for E8:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E%E2%82%88_%28mathematics%29

Pure theoretical mathematics problems often find real application many years later.

But really who cares about that, there is beauty in pure mathematics.
It is relevant to us.

We spend billions on war... Why can't we spend a few dollars on further understanding of math.

What is your problem with this?

Do you believe that we should all go back to living in the jungle?

People do literature.

People do music.

People do philosophy.

People do math.

Just because you don't think it's useful does not mean that it is not interesting to some of us.

That is a very popular idea here on the shroomery, wouldn't you agree?

And believe me, the dollar amount for this project is a drop in the bucket compared to other trivialities.

I'm positive it's not costing you much...

I mean what do you need for this?

A super computer... Which are dimes a dozen these days.

Salaries for professors... paid by the school.

That leaves us with the slave.. I mean graduate students/post docs.

You know what you are right. I guess I was just not really thinking Newton's law of gravity never got really understood till years later so I see your point. And funding a war is I think one of the biggest wastes. I think I am just cranky or something. It is great to hear of such great advancements and I would like to see phenomenal advances in my lifetimes so if this helps then great.

OH man I didn't mean to sound so harsh man...

It's good to question things.

Math can seem like a lot of bullshit at times...

In what size and type of font? Obviously, they asked this question of a mathematician and NOT a computer scientist (at least, I HOPE so)

Hand written solutions dont generally have a size and font type.

I remember reading the solution took up over 60 gigs of storage or something like that. That is absolutely ridiculous.
