just something iv never thought about that just hit me, do you have to use distilled water when preparing jars and spraying your casing?

I don't. I just use regular tap water with peroxide. So to answer your question, you don't have to use distilled water. Although many will recommend it.

Well it probably doesn't matter when you're preparing your jars cuz you're going to Pressure Cook them anyways.

Its true.... Its a matter of opinion, in my opinion lol. Using distilled water is just another tool used to cut down the risk of contams. I use regular tap water, boiled, then cooled. Thats what works for me, so that is my superstition.

I thought I had heard that tap was suggested against due to ions of hardness and chlorine/fluorine content...but I may be dreaming this up???

No your not dreaming at all. But the presence of chlorine, etc. is usually so small/diluted in the water that it has no affect. Just use DH2O or Bottled Spring Water if you don't feel safe with tap water.

Thanx for the affirmation C12H17N204P, it's been a while sisnce I read about that stuff. I agree, also, that it doesn't really matter if you use tap(at least not where I live). Probably just a mental thing with me, but I don't use tap with agar cultures. That prob wouldn't matter either though. JWS

Use bottled spring water in your jars...the natural minerals that are in the water are great for your new friends..distilled water is completely lacking in minerals

I've used water from the stream by my home...it works fine but I find that little pieces of dirt and crap end up floating around in it and I'm to lazy to strain it out..

PPL use dung as a substrate... If I were going to worry about a few trace elements floating around, I sure as hell wouldn't be planning on using shit to grow on...
Don't strain those floaties.. They contain the 'trace' elements you are hoping to get when using a natural water source... Besides.. You are about to PC that water/substrate mix anyway.
I have yet to use a 'natural' water source as of yet, but I pan to definately try pondwater from my pond on my next attempt. Especially after reading so many ppl recommending natural water sources and aquarium water, etc...
But since I'm gonna PC.. I surely wouldn't strain anything....
