Chlorinated Water
    #1182992 - 01/01/03 02:08 PM (14 years, 26 days ago)

If I were to use chlorinated water when I made the substrate and when I dunked the cakes, how would this affect growth? Also, is there any kind of test for chlorine in water?

The small amounts of chlorine in water are not harmful neither for substrate preparation nor for dunking.
Some people even add some bleach to the dunking water since this supposedly lowers contamination rates.

So this couldn't have caused my low yields?

I'm gonna have to say that dunking cakes in heavily chlorinated water does affect yield. I have really bad water where I live and I did a test where I dunked 6 cakes in bottled water and 6 cakes with tap water. The bottled water dunked cakes did fine - but the chlorinated tap water cakes fruited poorly and most of the fruits were mutated. I had a similar thing happen recently when I dunked some cakes in questionable water, which resulted in delayed fruiting or none at all. Now I stick to only bottled water for mycology just to be on the safe side.
