What's wrong with using Tap (Chlorinated Water)??????
    #2030900 - 10/22/03 12:49 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Okay, this one has been puzzling me for awhile. Most will say including Stamets in Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms not to use tap water or chlorinated water when creating spawn. However, in the very same book he suggests that you can chemically treat straw using sodium hypochlorite (bleach) without even rinsing it off, just draining it. Anybody have a clue?

yeah well...in spawn creation, the bleach in tap water would slow down the mycellium growth in the spawn...the bleach used to reat straw is more to reduce contamination as it raises the PH of the straw to like 11 causing a hostile environment for contams but not so much for the mycellium. That is my understanding.

That seems odd to me as well. Sodium hypochlorite is even used in many, many fungicides.

I wouldn't think fungi would grow vey well at all in an environment with a pH of 11. That's pretty strong, especially since their optimum growth range is a pH of 5-6. Just my 2 cents.

No, there's a confusion here. Stamets suggests two alternative methods of preparing straw. One method the alkaline bath method uses hydrated lime to raise the ph of the water killing any ph sensitive microorganisms. The ph is raised to 8.5 and gradually falls as the mycelium grows. The other method is the bleach bath method which utilizes bleach to kill microorganisms. This brings me back to my original question. Is there any evidence that using tap water is harmful. My guess that it isn't.

I use it for my karo jars and not problem. I do use distilled water for my dunking/rolling. Probably don't have to but what the hell.

I as well use tap water and my cakes are pinning as I type. But then agian i might depend on each water treatment facilty so you might wanna try a few jars and see how they do for you then decide on your individual account.

i would think filtered well water would be ideal, as it's just about as close as you can get to river water without actually going to a river..

Actually, It is! There is an underground stream that my house is tapped in to. And we also have an advanced drinking water filter. Its about 2 months old and water tastes better than bottled water IMO.
