I think it's a little of both. It human nature to feel the need to spread the seed. However, simple desire is one thing, letting it control you is another beast entirely. Judging from studies there is a definite correlation between family members who cheat (mom or dad runs around, son and/or daughter does the same). Of course there are exceptions the rule.  The human mind/body is an amazing thing. I don't think we'll ever fully understand all of it's idiosyncrasies and quirks.

Not even remotely. One is based on trust (more than there is in most monogamous relationships even, at least in that area) and the other is specifically about dishonesty and betrayal. Polyamory and cheating are diametrically opposed.

Both are based on the initial presumption that it's somehow wrong to screw someone else. That makes 'em same tree.

You're not even making any sense here. Unless you meant to say that polyamory and cheating are based on it not being wrong to have sex with other people while in a relationship with someone? Thing is, you're still way off base. In a real polyamorous relationship it's about trust, love and being together as a unit. Cheating is the opposite of that, completely.

Then we're insecure as a species. Darkstar you're on the money that we'll probably never know the reason why to certain things.

Pretty much, and you can thank religion for a sizable part of that insecurity.

Why do we have to be faithful to our spouses?

Because we live in a possessive and mostly ego-driven society in which people tend to 'own' their spouses and offspring. Vices such as jealousy, greed, fear, anger, and so on exist. Also, Earth is part of a binary system and I suspect that has something to do with it.. also.. see religion.

Monogamy is perfectly natural but it is rather uncommon for mammals to practice it.. Polygamy on the other hand is a very ancient practice from many cultures around the globe, and seems to be the more logical choice. And is still the norm in some cultures. However, there exists such a mistrust, lack of communication, dishonesty, fear, jealousy, possessiveness etc.. between so many couples that something such as polygamy would probably shatter whatever fragile bonds are there. Our modern society which is largely fueled by propaganda, creates "standards" based on illusion. Marriage certificates, Gay people can't get married in our state... it's all bullshit. What matters is that human souls are capable of sharing massive amounts of love and creative energy, and locking yourself to one person is rather restricting if you ask me. But if that's your thing more power to you. To each his own. We all have our free will, unless you give it away. There is no right or wrong.. polygamy, monogamy.. a personal choice between two or more people.

In short a lot of people are insecure and ego-driven. I would imagine more advanced civilizations in other star systems, polygamy would be the standard more often than not.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a behavior being inherently "right" or "wrong".

In a biological sense, our goal is procreation; to pass along our genetic material. A long time ago, the best way for a man to do this was to screw as many women as possible. This increases the chance of pregnancy and the survival of at least one offspring. Thus, its likely that humping everything that moved was somehow selected for as an evolutionary advantage.

Nowadays, modern medicine makes the survival of a child a given. So now, the best way for a man to pass along his genetic material is to raise a good child, with good values, who will find a good mate (and further the passage of the genes to the next generation). The best way to do this is probably through a monogamous, exclusive relationship.

None of the above is fact (obviously), just my humble opinion.

While in most cases, you are right, monogamy does not appear to be the "natural" way, but for some animals it is.  Wolves, the majority of the time, are monogamous unless a partner dies, they also show deep amounts of affection for their partner.

Especially in tribal animals, like monkeys/baboons, the leader has his way with whoever he wants whenever he wants.  Although, I think (not positive) that the lower monkeys sometimes do only have one partner, while others don't.

Maybe they have more free-will and thought processes/awareness going on then we think :smirk:

I think there is a misunderstanding.

Polyamory is the practice of having multiple, honest, loving relationships at the same time. Unlike affairs, poly relationships are intended to be honest and consensual. The range of polyamorous relationships is large and ranges from somewhat casual to extremely committed (including group marriage) situations.

Cheating and polyamory are far from the same.

I think that some people were reading polygamy rather than polyamory

We do not have to be. I cheated once on a girl I was in love with and then she ended up doing it to me later on. However I learned a long hard lesson and now I will not go out with a girl unless I know that I am totally in to her and ready to only be with her and her only. I will never cheat on someone I'm with again. I even had chances to have a threesome with these 2 beautiful girls and I walked away and called my girl up and told her I loved her. The thought of someone cheating on a loved one makes me sick to my stomach. How would you like it, if you were with someone you really cared about and found out she had another cock in her.

hahahaha!  WHORED!  awesome.  i am so glad someone said this.  i couldn't agree more!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i don't understand cheating and i never will.  i have no problem whatsoever with monogamous relationships.  IMO they are far more fulfilling and rewarding.  i would much rather have tons of sex with one person than a string of one night stands with tons of people.

if you're not fully satisfied with your current sex life, why not try spicing things up with new positions, body oils, Mr. Goodhead gel (i  the passion fruit flavor), erotic videos, role playing, hand cuffs, sex toys, etc., etc. before you go out and stick your dick into some slut who may or may not leave you with a herpes consolation prize???
