Did I just fu.ck up this whole operation??
    #640554 -

Ok.....
I finaly got AL the stuf required for cultivation. Yet when I get to my buddies apartment, which he JUST moved into, i find out that he has NO measuring cups, and instead of a standard large bowl, all he had was a gargantum "Mountain Duew" plastic jug like thing.
Ok, so without a measuring cup, I kinda guessed at it. I was an I D I O T and added the ingrediants in the wrong orde, I realise this...I put in the vermiculite, then the water, then the flour (Yes, and I'm a college student too....sigh)....anyway, since I was guessing at it (And making enogh for 6 jars I might add), I came out with a mix that was pretty moist, but not sopping wet. I stirred it around wtih my fingers (I washed them with soap and water and then with alcohol)...and then proceeded to pour the contents into the 1/2 pint jars. I poured it in, and broke up the ompact pieces at the top with my fingers, and shook the mix in the kar to open it up a bit.
I then placed four jars in my new Pressure Cooker (I didnt know it only held four), and to my dismay, noticed my PC did NOT have a PSI gauge.....it merely has this nob that sits atop of the steam stack, that rocks back and fourth, and will go up to 15 PSI. So I have NO idea if its cooking at 15 psi or not! GRRRRR.
So I cooked the stuff for 50 miuntes, and its now cooling (I will wait 12 hours).
So here's my question.....DID I TOTALY FU.CK THIS UP?? I think I did. I persoanly think I should hunker down, throw out the sterlized mix, and bring some measuring cups next time...or do you think I will bo ok, and to try inoculating with what I have now?
Also, is it ok to leave the jars SEALEd in the pressure cooker for a few days, seeing as thats how long it will probably take to get to them? And also, is my pressure cooker a piece of crap??
Thanks for all comments. I know I was an idiot, but it WAS my first time, and i DID expect to have a damned measuring cup :-P

Yeah you fucked up! Big Time! you might as well go out and by some measuring cups and something to mix the substrate in:

1/8 cup BRF
1/2 cup Verm
60mL spring H2O

Go by some new KERR 1/2 pint jars.
I think Wally World has real small pressure cookers now that only hold 4 jars but only cost $20.

Yeah its best to leave the jars in the PC while they coold down. THe less you fuck with them the less theres are chance of contamination. I would let them site overngiht, don't even bother to open the PC. Then in the morning take a shower, put on gloves, and turn you oven on to the lowest setting. Pull out the rack and bring the whole pressure cooker over to it. Sterilize your syringe, open the PC, take out the jars and set them on the oven rack. Then qucikly inoculate all the jars, sterilizing the syrings between each jar, then get them in your chamber a.s.a.p.
If you keep it sterile, you'll have some shrooms to feast on in a few weeks.

Remeber to put in a layer of put vermiculite on the top before you put on the tin foil. Also make sure you have poked the four holes into the lid... you wouldn't want to do this while at the same time trying to keep the contents sterile...

Empty the jars, measure it out and then start over.

HAY,BRO!!!!
As long as you have 2 times the verm as bfr, a good mix is 2,1,1
2 hand fulls of verm 1 of brf, just mix dry stuff an add water slowly
mix quickly an you will see how easy it is!!! just put enough water so
when you pinch some an squize it, not to much water comes out.
you can ball it up bigger an squize untill maybe a few drops come out
between the palms of your hands DONT WORRY also just boil them in
a pot for an hour an 15 min. but put something like a big lid on bottom
to keep the jars off the bottom of pot, easy!!! PEACE...LOU
Oh your cooker is fine just small?

How do you all MIX this stuff? Do you just use your fingers, a wooden spoon, what? Im kinda confused on this because If I use my hands, I know I mix it well, but it also compacts it. Come to think of it, id get the same result from a spoon....so whats the secret?
Also, the tek I am following says after its mixed and placed in the jar, place a small sheet of tinfoil ofer the top of the jar (lidless), and push it a bit until it create aa pool in the jar (careful not to compress the VERM). PLace a bunch of DRY Vermiculite in that poole, then close the lid. Is that ALL I need to do? Any more tifoil I need to put on (various teks claim various methods). As it stands, i will have a bunch of jars with tinfoil UNDER the lid wtih dry vermiculite (What does that do anyway?), covered with a lid with two holes, and thats it. What else should I do, if anything?

Mix it with a spoon.

>covered with a lid with two holes, and thats it
2 holes? why 2 holes? You are supposed to have 4 holes. If you inoculate only at 2 holes it will take considerably longer to colonize.

Yeah but he could put twice the amount of CC's in each hole. For a beginner its better to have less holes cuz contamination is the number one reason newbies fuck up, wouldn't you agree?

Yes, i am using a good tek (Tek for Dummies I believe), and it says I can d 4 holes, but as c12 said, 2 offers less contamination.

No, I wouldn?t.
Either your syringe is sterile or not.
Either your inoculation techniqe is good or not.

The more holes you inoculate in, the faster the colonisation will be.
See it this way. If you only inoculate 2 holes at the opposite sides of the jar, and if you assume the mycelium is growing equally fast in each direction, then after the spores have germinated the mycelium will have to grow 1/4 of the jar around the jar to meet with the mycelium that grows from the opposite hole.
If you inoculate 4 holes, the mycelium will only have to grow only half that far.
Thus the colonisation is faster.

Anno, you make an EXCELLENT point....and I will be drilling 4 holes when I get back to my friends house and re-do the mix ;-) Thanks for the suggestion.

4 holes are better than one.

4 holes is way to go. Contamination arises after its been sitting there really long and it gets nasty and prone to contams. If your mycelium is growin faster at the 4 different innoculation spots, it wont contam cause mycleium has a grip on that area.
