food dehydrator and spores in the air??
    #6363212 -

well lately i have seen posts about breathing in spores can give you respiratory problems.
so i was looking at my new food dehydrator and was looking at the diagram on the side of how it works and if i harvest my mushies and fill my food dehydrator, when the mushies start to dry and release the spores dont they get blown in to the air out of the dehydrator??

i know it cant be too much of a prob because loads of people use them but i was curious.

thx for any input

Those aren't the spore that are toxic..

Spores that cause ploblems are that black mold, Asparillus (I think) and sever others.. Shroom spores are non toxic.

cubensis spores are not harmful in any dose that you could get through the air from a dehydrator. now if you snort them on the other hand...

False, any dose is broad. They will not germinate and cause problems like the stachybotrys but if you will to inhale something that would coat your lungs then you will have problems but probably not life threatening. I have once dried a shit load of ports in my bedrooms while i was sleeping and i woke up all stuffy and it made me do the research on this.

They might be non-toxic, but it would probably be the same as breathing in dust and that is an irritant.

exactly.  there's even a condition known as "mushroom picker's lung" - google it if you'd like.

its not a risk i'd worry much about.  put into perspective too that somebody who gets "mushroom picker's lung" might be spending 40+ hours a week harvesting and cleaning mushrooms.  you might be into your hobby but i doubt you got a grow that big.

common sense pretty much comes to the rescue here.

try and harvest before you have a mess of spores in the first place.  lots of good reasons to do so, this is one more.

keep your dehydrator clean.

don't run it on your bedstand next to your face at night.

if you think you've really got a large load on hand, dry them in a ventilated area.

and though its not part of the original question, be prudent around contaminates, assume any of them may be potentially harmful, and careful how you breathe when disposing them, handle with care, and again, common sense.

I'd have to agree with the last few posts. ANYTHING you breath in for prolonged periods of time will have adverse effects on your lungs. Including but not limited to: Perlite & Vermiculite dust, spores, dehydrating poo vapors, etc.

If you are worried about it why not run the dehydrator outside?

On that note: If it's cold out can that be done?

>>>>>On that note: If it's cold out can that be done?<<<,

Dehydrator generates it's own heat.
So, sure it can be done.
I use mine in an unheated garage, during winter.

Mushroom spores can be very dangerous, especially if you're sick. Those who've noticed I've been a bit bitchy the last few days now know the reason. About a week ago, I was laid out with a bad respiratory flu and high fever. I had a flush of Hypsizygus ulmarium due to be picked(and filmed for the video) but was too sick with fever so left them in the mini greenhouse. 48 hours later, I couldn't breathe, and had what I can only describe as dry pneumonia. My lungs were completely full of spores and they were literally suffocating me. My lungs became infected, and I've been laid up for an extra week now trying to recover. It was the spore load that did it. I still can't even go into my bedroom/growroom to this day to clean it out and had to move out to the living room to sleep to get away from the spores. God only knows how many projects I've lost during this week away.

Bear in mind, this species drops ten times as many spores as cubes, and the greenhouse was full, but I'll never let that happen again!

As said, the amount of spores in a dehydrator won't likely hurt, but be careful of massive spore discharges in your growing area, especially if you're sick already.

I'm sure one of those $500 'GOOD' vacuum cleaners with, like, a triple HEPA filter, and shit would do a good job.
Or a flow hood set up to recirculate a shit load of air with a damn good HEPA.
Or bleach, and lot of time & effort.

Hell.. just move.
