Depressing. (a.k.a. crack is whack.)

A while back my good friend Ei got to know this kid who we'll call Clay. Clay was really smart, and really funny, just a great guy to be around. He was 26 years old, acted like he was nineteen, but also possessed maturity and wisdom beyond his years, even though he did like to drink lots of juiceboxes and Capri Sun. Clay used to be seriously addicted to ecstasy, crack, and cocaine. His favorite of the three was crack.

Clay's one of those people who simply has an addictive personality. Even in the throes of drug use he knows he doesn't want to be doing what he is doing. He claims he does these things because he's "depressed" but he realizes it's not doing anything to help his depression.

When Ei met him this summer, he had been sober for 3 years, he was doing really well for the first time in his life. THey got very close, and then she went with my girlfriend to Argentina for 3 months. Clay was really bad about keeping in touch, and Ei was hurt...when she came back she tried to get in touch with him to no avail.

Finally on Saturday night she was stuck in NYC with no place to sleep and couldn't get in touch with me because my phone had died. So, she called Clay and said I'm coming over to your house...to which he responded, "Um, I'm not doing so good."

She gets to his apartment and he's there with a very large muscular black man with a heavy set of nappy, dirty dreads, who he calls his "friend," Dave. Turns out Dave has been living in the apartment for the last 10 days, stealing Clay's stuff and selling it off, and giving him crack to keep him satisfied and let him stay there. Plasma TV stolen and sold, computer stolen and sold, mixer stolen and sold, money stolen...etc. etc.

Dave goes to the bathroom and Clay tells Ei, "I don't know how to get rid of him." It becomes clear this is a very bad situation. Ei ends up paying the guy to leave...gives him $150 dollars, and the guy leaves,a nd says he's coming back at 9 AM (it's 5 AM at this point) to collect more money and smoke more crack.

Clay, who used to have babyfat around his jowls, is gaunt, green-looking, completely strung out on crack. He looks like a skeleton. Ei gets him in the shower and gets him dressed, and then he frantically searches his apartment for every last bit of rock he can find and smokes it all while apologizing I'm so sorry I'm so sorry.

Finally she got him to the train station and put him on a train to Boston and had him call his dad, who is now driving him to rehab in Maine.

The past 3 months he's just been spiraling down down down...he told her he had a connection for "really good crack" and the guy disappeared, so he started walking over to the projects to find it. He would get his ass beat regularly and that was how he met "Dave." Anyway, it's just a crazy situation.

I've never been close to a situation like this. And now all of a sudden in the past 3 months two people I know pretty well have ended up in hardcore drug rehab. Wild.

I don't even know what to say... I want to say something because I've watched people that are awesome fall down the seemingly bottomless crack hole... but I just can't.

Not because I want to pretend it's not real...just because it's TOO real.  Right now.

He wasn't in touch with any family except to ask for money, and just wasting away.

shitty situation.. but, he's lucky to have met at least one good person in the time he was doing well.. someone that at least did something... a lot of people would have left him where he was.

it's probably a good things she was a girl.. the guy might not have left so easily, otherwise.

I've been around people like this for a good portion of my life. I've seen some pretty horrible things happen to people on the drug scene. I know exactly what it's like to watch someone get this way. Lost good friends to the shit and had my fair share of struggles with crack and heroin myself. :undecided:

Ei sounds like an amazing person. We should all be so lucky as to have a friend like that. I hope your friend recovers and can get past this.

the sad thing is that there will probably be many people i know who will end up some way like this.

some of them being my friends since i was like 8-9.

i hate thinking about like how we were all when we were little and how we are now.

Hey, he slipped off the wagon, that normal, thats fantastic that hes going to rehab again! :laugh: Good for your friend being there, who may have saved his life. I've been in the same situation, and had people close to me "rat" on me and I ended up in jail and rehab. Now, I can look back and thank them, because they most definitely saved my life.

Yeah.. my sister's baby daddy got addicted to crack, sold his house, spent all the money on crack while living at my sister's, now he's broke and out on his ass. She booted him out. He was quite the fuck up.
