easiest active/edible species to hunt for

I have been picking a few times for cyans, along with whatever else there is to find and have never found anything. the only time I ever find something is when i hunt for azures. it seems to me that there are less lookalikes for azures than cyans, libs, stuntzii and basically everything else. i have found some specimens of what i think might be cyans and my more experienced friend just laughs at me. anyone else have the same situation? its not like im complaining though; IMHO azures knock the socks off of just about everything else. It's fairly ironic that the most powerful mushroom is the easiest to find for me. Now on to edible species. Will morels grow in open, plowed fields in eastern washington or do you need to go to the more wooded areas to the west and east of the palouse region? I plan on going to the north central part of the state this spring but i was also trying to hit up places a little closer to home as well. Thanks for any knowledge you might provide.

Morels LOVE burn sites. If you can find a place that was recently burned by forest fire, go there.

Yes Burn sites, old orchards, and hardwood forests especially with Eldars. You may occasionally find some growing under conifers, but that's pretty rare. So yeah, if there were any fires in your area in the last 5 years or so I'd check there first. Good luck, and cheers to spring.

I can't help you with the actives, but as far as edibles the easiest to find and identify besides morels, at least where I hunt, would be oysters (Pleurotus ostreatus), Chanterelles (Cantharellus cibarius), boletes (Boletus edulis), Puffballs (either Calvatia or Lycoperdon), and my favorite the Shaggy Mane (Coprinus comatus). Of course, get yourself a good field guide and join a local mushroom club, and happy hunting.

well if you've picked cyasn befor, then its usually pretty hard to mis-identfy them from then on, assuming the fact you know the difference between galerina's and cyans. i find cyans very easy to hunt for. once you see em' usually you know you've got em':grin:

if you can id P. azurescens, you can id P cyanescens. the only macroscopic difference worth mention is the cap aspect and margin undulation at maturity. other than that, they would be dead ringers for one another within thier common range of variation; from texture [of all parts] to smell, color, general size, bruising, taste, etc.
