Converting 2-cycle ICE to Stirling air engine

Nobody produces Stirling engines apart from very small demonstration models. I am, or rather, will be, attempting to create a small Stirling engine for use in an independent studies project. I need somebody with good knowledge of ICE's to help me out.

I read somewhere that it is a bad idea to try and convert an ICE into a Stirling design and that it would be more effective to just design an air engine from the ground up for custom applications. I have no metal-working/machine shop skills and this is the only route I can see being feasible for someone in my position.

Now, I know 2 cycles mix fuel and oil for lubrication and combustion. So let's take for example this image:



I would essentially be using 2 of these, one for the hot cylinder and one for the cold cylinder. If you don't know Stirling engines just Wiki it and you'll get the gist. It's easy to understand. What I would like to do is hook a small electric motor up to both crankshafts to turn the pistons and generate heat/cold. So minus the spark plug on top, minus the carb and muffler. The in/outtakes on both cylinders would be piped into each other creating an "alpha" configuration Stirling engine.

So according to this picture the air will go from the intake port down to the crankshaft portion of the engine, through the transfer port and then through the outtake. One of the only problems I can see arising is with lubrication. Obviously the pistons will still need lubrication to run smooth. But without a gas/oil mix how will I achieve this without hot/cold air interfering? Will it even interfere? Would I be better off modifying the pistons to go far enough on the downstroke to draw air directly from intakes rather than from the transfer port?

Is this just a pipe dream, and would I be better off modifying a different engine? Or worst yet, somehow fabricating my own engine? I really need help with this so I can get this project off the ground. My college has a full machine shop but I'm not fully aware of their capabilities. If necessary I'm sure I could work a collaboration with some of the students in that program to help me out with this.

If you can help, even just offer a little guidance/criticism/suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. I've had this in my head for a few weeks and need to get my hands dirty with it.

Untrue. At least, about a year ago there were two or three companies that I found that were making production stirling engines in the 1 to 20 horsepower range. They were not cheap, however... nor were they small.

One of the car manufacturers actually had a car out for a while that used a stirling engine. It didn't sell well because people were not happy about waiting twenty to thirty seconds for the car to warm up before they could drive it.

Advice? Get your hands dirty with it and worry about the rest later. Half the battle is actually starting... it is all downhill from there.

What temperature differences do you think you will be working with? I've heard anything less than a 800°F difference is very ineficient.

I won't be supplying a temperature difference. I will be supplying work via an electric motor and yielding a temperature difference for heating and cooling. A heat pump, if you will.

But yes, anything under 800 F is inefficient in producing work.

I have no idea what to expect at this point. I know it can be done because that's how cryogenics companies create such low temps. It could fail miserably or pleasantly surprise me. That's part of the learning experience.

Thanks, Seuss. I didn't know that about the Stirling engine car. I know a few companies produce Stirling engines but for very specialized applications.

I may have got my hands on a couple discarded 2 cycles. I just need to check in with my coworker and see.

I'm beginning to think it might be easier using discarded air compressor parts rather than 2 cycle engines. Still need to find a source for either, though.
