Lab grade Incubators

Does anyone use an actual laboratory grade incubator, or know what kind would be the best kind to get (i.e what heating method is best for jars)? I have found a few decently priced ones on ebay, but I am worried that I am going to get one and use it only to find out that it dries out my jars or something...

I have owned several.
They and shipping are spendy.

Best bang for the buck is a DEAD 24 cubic ft upright freezer.
Which can be had (often for FREE) at appliance sale & repair places.
All you have to do is call around locally.
They are easy to find.


They are so well insulated, you can heat one with a 5 watt light bulb, wrapped in aluminum foil.

For heat control, use a reptile thermostat.
(google reptile thermostat, or check eBay)

With other slight modification, they also make GREAT fruiting chambers.

No particular tek.
Get one or 2, as large as possible.
FREE IS BEST.
(with good seals & tight door)

Obviously, shelves are built in.
As is a defrost drain hole & hose in the bottom.
Gut out compressor in bottom.

Drill 1 inch + hole on side near top.
(big enough 1 inch PVC will slide through)
Drilling the holes is the toughest part.

Enlarge drain hole & hose.
Find large pan or tray that will slide underneath.
To catch drainage.

You can either drill 1/2 inch hole.
Or, cut 1/4 inch out of door seal.
So, you can run 1 or more extension cords into it.

Install growlux florescent type mini-light in top.
(this one is for fruiting)

Install small watt incandescent near bottom shelf.
Wrap in tinfoil.
(this on is for heating).

Install a reptile type thermostat sensor.

Install PVC pipe for FAE

You can pipe in a cool mist, if you wish.


Small fan for FAE.

And/or build a CMX2 for on the bottom.

Get a couple decent timers.

This one is dirt cheap & has 96 off/on settings, in a 24 hour cycle.
(15 minutes each)

Then tune it in.
Until you are satisfied.

Incubating spawn jars & bags requires minimal heating.
(as box is super sealed & insulated)

Incubating spawned bulk h/poo or compost.
Requires no heat usually.
Trays will do it for you.

Warning, having the ability to pump cooler FAE into it.
IS WISE.
When incubating large spawned bulk trays.
As, you can cool the thing.

Winter months, is all easy, as heating is simple.
Mine are in an air/conditioned room.
So, in hot summer months, I can cool them.
(if need be)

There are a lot of variables.
you can trick them out.
Or, stay toilet flush simple.

I can LOCK mine.
They are easy to clean/sanitize.
With 2, you can run continuous cycles.
Incubating in one, fruiting in the other.

I good place to start is craigslist for your area. I was looking for a junk refrigerator to convert into a fruiting chamber, but for kicks I thought I would tinker with the one I got to see why the college kid was giving it away. Low and behold all it had was a damaged cord, after a quick repair I got a free beer/culture fridge for my garage.

It's about 20 degrees farenheit outside right now, where my broken fridge is (yes, i happened to have a broken fridge just laying around, damn i am a pack rat), so would u recommend i bring it indoors to do all this? a 5 watt bulb certainly doesn't seem like it'd be enough heat to heat the whole thing evenly to 82 degress....but if u say so, i'll definitly try it.

Oh and for those of u trying to score a fridge, another good resource of broken appliances are apartment complexes, i used to work for one and they throw away fridges all the time

A fridge is not as good as a freezer.
As, most fridges are 2 compartment (small freezer on top).
They don't usually have big shelves like upright freezers.

And, YES a 5 or 10 watt bulb will heat it.
IF IT IS IN A ROOM TEMPERATURE..... ROOM
(65 to 72F)

Best bet is use your local phone book.
Call appliance sale & repair places.

Tell then you are looking for a DEAD upright FREEZER.

To store paint in, out in your garage.

Or, anything like that.

You can also check municipal garbage dumps.
If they have them, they usually sell them for $10.
The scrap metal value.

i figured i'd just put all the equipment (humidifiers, fans, etc.) in the freezer part and drill holes thru to the fridge part and that way everything is contained inside. I figured it'd just look more uniform that way. thanks for all the info:)

I've used a fridge/freezer for fruiting in the past. Deffinitely prefer a martha-stewart-closet setup though. IF you got the extra $40, Id say go with it. Light weight, easy to disassemble during narc scares, and when not cultivating can be easily stored in a small space... The past 2 I've owned (still do) I didn't even pay for. Just looked at them interestingly at a garage sell and they were given away.

So do you want to drop any brand names for incubators... I don't care much for the TIT, or a big ass fridge..

I like an upright freezer, because content is not VISIBLE.

i've always had issues with the TiT, like uneven heating, or those damn aquarium heaters that constantly break....blah. i decided to hang that one up. i'm going to build my first fridge rig this weekend, i'm excited

Is the freon an issue with upright freezers?  How do you remove the compressor and inside coils?  can you cut the tube entering the the freezer if the freezer is not functioning?  I know this is an old post but find it to be important and not mentioned.  Where is the freon?  Can it be contained in the compressor and coils?

Agar did not post anything.  I don't think he is around.  In regards to old gutted freezers.  Can you paint them.  I noticed that the old paint decays and leave a fine film.  This seems like a dangerous health risk if cultivation mushrooms in them.  Has anyone ever painted the inside of a freezer where very small amount of rust visible?   

Also, I was told when freon is released from a freezer it sinks.  It is a gas under atm pressure but is compressed to a liquid by the compressor.  This is how it works.  This same person claimed the hole in the ozone layers if from human space flight.  Kind of makes sense based on the ozone layer elevation and thickness.  Anyone know if this is accurate.  Or how freon became a real danger if it actually is to ozone or humans?
