yup I use boiling method and have had 100% success with no contamination so far with 6 jars. Make sure the lid is on tight, no watter sloshes into the jar, dont let the jars get to hot and dry out and leave it there for a good hour and your golden.

hey im a newbie also and i didnt use a pc the first time i made jars ijust boiled it a large pot put a dish towel on the bottom in the water to prevent direct heat from stove pay real close attention to how fast the water is boiling you just want it to barely be rolling no splashing around and stuff put a lid on it and let as little steam as possible escape i boiled mine twice aslong as it says for a pc only one out of ten jars got infected. my second time to sterilize jars i got to use my moms pc and still only one jar got infected. the only thing it really saved was time but i am just a newbie

Thank you guys for the quick response, I think for the first time I'm going to attempt to boil. I plan on making 10 jars, so I don't have any left over spores. Hopefully I'll be able to get atleast 6 non contam. Wish me luck

Hey man, I didnt use a PC until last week, and Ive had probably 6-8 runs just using a boiling pot. And, only ONE jar ever got contaminated, and that was my very first time.
I reccomend boiling them for at least 1hr and 15 minutes...But not more than 1hr and 45mins. Just use a dishtowel or soemthing on the bottom so the jars dont come in contact with the hot metal.

I use one of those steamer flowers that you fold out and put on the bottom of the pan. This keeps the jars from directly touching the bottom..a towel will work too. Be careful taking them out and let them totally cool before inculating. Good luck on the first shot.

my friend still hasn't invested in a pressure cooker, and the only contams he ever got were from a bad syringe. he uses a big pot with a colander (or vegetable steamer attachment) inside it and does 8, 1/2-pint jars in each run.
he only cooks for an hour, and has had no problems as of yet.
most teks seem to have alternatives...
take care! good luck... -bizarro

You have to be extra careful, but it can be done.If you are working with a live culture i recommend hydrogen peroxide added after the boiling process. It will kill spores.

I was able to push out a 90%ish success rate.
