Help me out. I want to get this story off my chest. However small it is, it feels huge to me
    #6322917 -

This is just something that happened to me and I've felt angry and ashamed ever since.

Months ago I was woken up by a knock on the door. It was some random black guy (details..don't get mad) and he said to me "Man, I really need help. My tent at the Festival got hit by a tree last night. I'll give you 20 bucks to drive me to the park." I told him I would, and I went downstairs to get dressed etc.

Before I keep going:
1.) There was a festival going on in the park that day
2.) There was a HUGE storm the night before
3.) I heard the words $20 bucks and it got to me. I let greed get me.

So, I drive him to the park. He talked a lot about his tent, said he'd give me a sausage when we got there. It all sounded good. He also talked about titty bars and cheating on his wife. If he even had a wife. Apparently his name was "John".

It veered when he wanted me to just take his phone and wait for his call. I apparently wasnt supposed to go with him to his tent. But, I can't think under pressure. I can't do much of anything when it's not expected. So I just nodded and said sure. Took his phone, waited. I got bored and went to the park to kill some time. He then called me, I ran back to my car and picked him up in the middle of the street where he flagged me down. Immediately he wanted me to drive him somewhere else. He said "Man, you smoke?" At the time I didn't, but I was/am down with personal choice. However, I really didn't want to drive him somewhere to get weed. He said "I'll give you another $20 bucks to drive me to my guys house." I said I didn't want to get near his house and he assured me he'd get out well before the house and keep me away. I said sure like I always do and we started driving.

However, when he said stop we were at the house. It was shady as hell too. It occured to me that it was a crack house. All the windows were broken, it was terrible. But for some reason I sat there and waited. I risked my ass in front of some shady crack house, waiting for some guy I didn't know to buy crack so he could get back in my car. Why? God, why?

I waited, and he came back. He said we were done and we should go back to his "house". At the time I almost still believed that he had a house. It was conveniently close to my house too..

So before we leave, he pays me a sum total of $13 dollars. I was pissed off inside but I just let him walk all over me. I was like.."Whatever..it's cool..." even though it wasn't. I drop him off and am basically just stunned. I wasn't even mad at the time. I didn't know what I felt.

Here's where it gets really retarded. He comes back, hours later. He said "Man, I need you again. One more ride, come on." I told him no, no more rides. I at least did that. He wouldn't leave and he eventually said "Ok, can I at least get money for a cab or bus ride?". I told him no. Then he said "Ok man, how about this? I'll give you my keys and my watch for $10 bucks. I'll come back with your $10." I thought to myself, incorrectly, "well he wouldn't want to lose his keys or watch". Why would he even have keys? He obviously didnt have a car or a house. His watch probably cost him $0.30. So anyway, I finally agreed. When he left I felt like it was a poor decision. Before he walked away I told him "You better come back man. I'm gonna lose a lot of faith in people if you burn me." I don't know why I told him that. He didn't care and I didn't know if I meant it.

So, obviously he never came back. I kept the watch and keys for like 2 weeks before I became angry at the site of them and threw them away.

He took such advantage of me and I just let him do it. I could have told him no, no rides in the first place. I let some stranger get in the car with me. Some stranger in Atlanta...it was pretty shady. Then I stayed when he wouldn't let me go to his "tent". He obviously didnt have one. I even asked some people at the Festival if they knew a "John".."sold sausage"..nobody. But I kept going despite all the lies. Then I risked my ass for him to buy drugs because I didn't know what to do. Then he paid me $13 dollars and I just smiled like a weakling. Then he came back and burned me AGAIN, at my own house.

I don't know how I feel about that. Many of my friends know about this except for the crack house part. That's the part that gets me the most. I can't believe the risk I took right there, all for the sake of some money I didn't get. It was such a weak point on all accounts. Greed, weakness, fear.

That's all I got. It feels good to have written it down.

well...

I might have missed something but...

He paid you 13 dollars, and then you gave him 10.

So at least you made three bucks!

I know how easy it is to get sucked into things like that and not wanting to say no. Thinking it may make you look bad for turning someone down/or not wanting to seem like an ass. I totally agree that it was super shady, as soon as he asked me (or you in this case) to hold his phone and wait for a call while he wonders off to god knows where and does whatever, I would tell him no way and get out of the situation. I'm not sure I would even have gotten out of bed to give some random black guy a ride. With all the weirdos out there these days your lucky he didn't just pull a gun or knife at any of those times you were driving. He could have gotten away with alot more than his 10$, like your car or your life.

Spend the 3$ in spite of that fool.

BTW, what time at night was it?

Sounds like you are a genuinely nice person at heart and that's why you let him kinda take advantage and were slow to anger. I too am just naturally very polite and have a penchant for helping people out of the blue; oftentimes people can take advantage of that. What's done is done, however, so don't let it get to you.

But man, that specific scenario sounds a little sketch, if I have any advice for you, it's use caution when picking people up, for your own sake.

That should have been your first clue as to what a dick that guy was  Seriously though, assholes like that can spot a caring trusting person miles away. I've been burned so many times it's not funny. I think I, like you, want to believe the best about people.........

i have a similar story from last summer: so i see this woman with an IV tube hanging out her arm and using a walker and smoking crack outside the beer store and she was filthy and i asked her when was the last time she had eaten was:"Not since yesterday" So i asked her if she wanted to come back to the house so i could make her some food and so she could bathe.

Long story short: She ended up stealing my credit card, a shitload of cash(to me anyway) track pants and my favorite hoodie :frown: I could tell you so many stories about my getting fucked over like that due to my trusting nature but i'm sure you get the point. I just didn't want you to think you're alone in the sort of BS  that asshole pulled on you

i think i remember when it first happened to you, or maybe it was a similar story from someone ales?

either way, don't get down on your self!
you did something stupid and greedy and it sucks, now you've got to live with the regret of having done it
so hopefully you've learned your lesson and next time you won't be as greedy/careless when helping people?

there are lots of things in my life i look back at with shame and disdain in my heart but there's really no use to keep bugging my self about them, i just do my best to be better now!

Yeah Bro

I think this kind of thing has happened to everyone at least once before. I've got a story that's just as bad.

At least now you can take a more cynical approach next time.

Live and learn dude. Nothing to be ashamed of. Just try and remember the lesson. It took me 30 years to get good at that kind of shit.

There was a really good line from Robin Trower's first album from the song called "Too Rolling stoned" ~~*The takers get the honey and the giver's sing the blues"*~~ I have found that to be so true, i mean you want to help a person that's down and all but now i step back and objectively ask myself why they are down, you don't make a whole lot of friends stealing from people.........

People like that are the reason trust is so hard to find.

But maybe the problem is that people don't help other people unless they think there's something in it for them? Therefore, he lies...

Man, too many people suck. It makes me cynical, you just never want to be cynical enough that you would do something like that.

Don't be mad, actually you should be grateful that you didn't get assaulted and butt raped and left in back alley way. Cause that situation sounded shady all the way through.

It was shady from start to finish  I'm very grateful it turned out the way it did. I still feel silly about it but I feel much better.

You make a good point man, the truth is if i ran into a guy in that condition i probably would have done the same thing.I didn't do it because i thought there was anything(ie sex) in it for me, i just saw someone down and out and wanted to help them get back on their feet. Funny thing is i saw her the other day but didn't even stop to harrass her for stealing my stuff but i'm sure as soon as she made eye contact with me the first time B4 i brought her home she was thinking "this is going to be easier than stealing candy from a baby"

Hopefully your "shady radar" has been honed because of this incident. The second you get that bad vibe from a person you should start walking in the other direction.

MOst of them can hide their inner intentionality so well. Ever see a dead rat? It's because they always find another hole to crawl into.(someone else to rip off) I always laugh when people are asked to compare themselves to an animal/birds or w/e and they say an eagle, a lion, a dove etc when most of the time they are just vultures, snakes, skunks and worse if you catch my drift....
