Hyperinflation in the USA

In economics, hyperinflation is inflation that is "out of control", a condition in which prices increase rapidly as a currency loses its value. No precise definition of hyperinflation is universally accepted. One simple definition requires a monthly inflation rate of 50% or more. In informal usage the term is often applied to much lower rates. The definition used by most economists is "an inflationary cycle without any tendency toward equilibrium." A vicious circle is created in which more and more inflation is created with each iteration of the cycle. Although there is a great deal of debate about the root causes of hyperinflation, it becomes visible when there is an unchecked increase in the money supply or drastic debasement of coinage, and is often associated with wars (or their aftermath), economic depressions, and political or social upheavals.

Hyperinflation in the USA.

Imagine the dollar destabilizing and plunging down into the depths of devaluation. Imagine the money you own shriveling into nothing, so that last year's dollar may now be worth a mere ten cents. Let's for discussion's sake assume a devaluation of atleast half the value in one year.

Hyperinflation in the USA.

Can you see it happening in the forseeable future? How would it affect America, World Economy, and your own private economy? Let's discuss the likeliness and effects of economic catastrophy striking the US.

If the United States economy collapsed it wouldn't bode well for the rest of the world.

First off, hyper-inflation would never happen for more than a short period in the US. Too many creditors hold too much power to be willing to accept payment in devalued currency to allow it to happen. The fed also does a great job of minimizing inflation.

I for one would benefit a fair amount from hyperinflation. I have about 5K in debt right now, so if I can pay off this "good dollar" debt with low value dollars I'll be coming out ahead. My day to day life would be tougher and I'd be unable to purchase good foods, but in the end I'd probably be better off for it.

I can't see how our society can remain on this path for much longer. I'm sure people we're thinking the same 100 years ago though.  :smirk:

I keep some savings in gold and silver bullion for this exact reason. With the Republicans in power the doller can't do anything but devalue!

Short of an invasion of the United States by a foreign power, the US will never seen hyperinflation in our liftime.

The Fed is VERY good at choking down inflation, even to the point of (IMHO) harming growth. Given the choice between more growth or less inflation, the Fed has consistently chosen less inflation, and major policy shifts at the Fed are unlikely, to say the least.

If the US economy was ever truly going to collapse it would have back in 2001. The stock market bubble had burst, venture capital, along with most investment banks, were completely tapped out, and most other capital sources still hadn't completely recovered from the Russian Bond defaults 2 years earlier that caused capital flight and bankruptcy among hedge and mutual funds. Even worse, the Fed had repeatedly dropped interest rates and the bond yield curve was STILL inverted going into the summer of 2001, and THEN 9/11 happened, shutting down the financial system for days and causing capital flight from the US.

We're unlikely in the extreme to ever see so many hurdles thrown at the US economy in such quick succession ever again. If the US economy could weather all of that and still not cease growing, short of a nuclear strike or an invasion onto US soil, nothing can touch the US economy.

Agreed. There are many checks and balances in the U.S. economy.

zippoz--you seem like a good guy. But you've got to get yourself off of this conspiracy track. Imagine your classmates from high school. Project them 20 years down the line. Are these the lizard
beings that rule over everything?

People in government are just...people. That's why they fuck shit up so much. But they asked for it: You want to be in control? Well, then, you'd better be ready for some heavy, RATIONAL,
criticism.

C'mon, man. You're the polar opposite from some 72 year-old man in Louisiana that thinks, "All muslims are potential terrorists" and "The Mexicans are ruining our economy".

But are they?
I read somewhere that a significant portion of inflation in the US is hidden, and that the REAL inflation in the USA is closer to 6% than to 2.5% already, among the highest of first world countries.

What exactly will "the Fed" do with the ever-increasing debt? Will there be more idiot wars and other capital-devouring frivolousness?

What if the real inflation makes people decide to spend their fiat currency savings on more solid posessions all at once?
Hyperinflation, that's what!

Hyperinflation won't last long, but in a month great damage (2.500% devaluation) has been done in the past.

The Gov't can, and the American people can, and if the people lose faith in the governmen'ts capabilities - or its intentions - then hyperinflation is nigh.

I for one recommend that people wherever in the world back 10-20% of their liquid capital with precious metals. I'm in the small camp of people who believe the US might see a bout of hyperinflation
(or more lasting economic malaise) in the coming decade or so.

Sure the Government COULD but why would it want too? And it would take a lot for the government to push the American people into causing economic collapse. Shoot, a quarter of American people
believe 9/11 was caused by the government but they still trust the value of money. Thats really all that supports the value of money; the peoples' trust in a piece of paper.

The Fed could destroy the "truthiness" of a dollar by printing trillions in extra monies to say, pay back the massive debt that this country owes. But it knows that would happen so it wouldn't do
that. Really no one would benefit from the collapse of the U.S. economy.

It depends on how you intend this. A hyperinflation is what happens if the people lose faith in their government and currency and that isn't too far away.

Modern governments deliberately allow or promote a level of inflation, because it's good for the economy. With inflation, you keep coming back for more because what you have is diminishing over time.
This may be good for the economy (as in: the flow of wealth) but for you personally the wealth you have earned is flowing away from you

Imagine this going south.
Imagine the next president will hire more military to throw more dollars into bottomless pit of the wars on terror and drugs.

America's debts are rising at a breathtaking rate. I read the REAL inflation in the US to be estimated at 6%. So if they quit the governmental tricks and constructions: you'd see the true value of the
dollar drop a full sixty dollars to each 1.000 every year.

What would happen if the US Govt cannot hide from their citizens that their dollar is dropping? The people would strive to invest and buy commodities to retain their wealth outside the dollar as they
lose trust in it. This will cause an avalanche known as hyperinflation.

In Argentina in the 1990s there was a tremendous hyperinflation, resulting in their $100 declining to be worth just $3.33
The government froze bank accounts so the citizens had no longer access, and behind the closed gates of the bank people's savings crumbled to dust.

At 6% inflation in the USA already is high, and with it it is closer to the point where people panic, and economic disaster occurs.

my theory is more of a long held belief, that things cannot go on like this forever. i just dont see it happening. What i imagine is somthing like the last stock market crash where everyone no longer
has faith in the value of the stocks they own and of the dollar itself. Eventually leading to a massive sell off at increasingly lower prices over a very short term.

thats my theory. as to what would kick off such an event.... probably war or other international situations which we can not possibly aviod living in this not so free market world economy.

Also the up comming resource wars, which i pray that technology will keep us ahead of. We are seeing one being fought right now in Iraq for the oil, as natural resources get smaller and smaller in
concentrations and demand grows higher, war will be the only way to "preserve our way of life" as we will not adapt to the change, but demand that things will stay the same.

However i believe that these resource wars are far off into the future and that the first scenario that i typed out above is more likely and imminent.

the dollar's value is entirely dependant on its percieved value from the rest of the world.
