Make your Panellus glow better!

A very kind soul hooked me up with a Panellus stictipus culture, and I was looking forward to seeing the luminescence. I had it on a petri dish, unsealed, and after about 2 inches diameter growth I could vaguely see some glowing in a ring just inside of the growth front.
Out of curiosity I did some research and came across this paper:
http://www.ecol.kvl.dk/~sto/PDFposters/OlssonRedox2000.PDF
Apparantly, they present evidence to show that the enzyme pathway that produces light could have evolved as a way to deal with oxidative processes. . .in any case, I didn't really give it much thought until I took off for the weekend.
Before leaving I paraffined the petri, to keep things clean and moist. Upon return, I noticed more growth and eagerly took it into the darkroom-----even after 5 minutes I could see nothing at all. Then the paper came to mind; oxidative metabolism. . .I removed the paraffin and cracked the petri slightly. Within 30 SECONDS I saw obvious, no-need-to-adjust-your-eyes luminescence. Very, very cool. They actually reported a peak activity at just over a minute of increased O2.
So the gist, you can increase the luminescence by going from a low O2 situation to a high O2 concentration; The paper also showed a dependence on glucose availability; perhaps a completely colonized jar that is sealed up, then vented [perhaps before inoculating something] would give the effect many are looking for.

I thank Suntzu for the kind words.
I am the "kind soul" to whom he refers. I have long be interested in biolumiescence in fungi, and located P. stipticus from another kind soul in Scotland last year.
I am willing to share the culture with others, PM me for info.
I have collected a series of references as well, which I will post ASAP.
I also have other biolume fungi in the works, so stick around.

There you go; Armedia might be getting a few PM's here. . .
The link above will take you to the paper, if you're having trouble with it, here's the basic info:
Bioluminescence in the basidiomycete Panellus stipticus: An alternative oxidase pathway?
Olsson, S., Crowe, J. D. and Thrane, C. Section for Microbiology and Genetics, Department of Ecology, KVL, Denmark
There is no publication given on this PDF, it may have not been published yet though I haven't checked.

I wonder how peroxidated media, whether it be agar or peroxide-treated wood, would affect the glowing. Might just have to try that one out. It seems to take some time growing at RT, do you know if it can handle higher temps, Armedia?

Well, we lost a few posts on this one, so I'll reply again.
As for peroxidated agar, PS seems happy on it (sawdust in the mix ~6g/L), seems to help.
Another recommended agar recipe is (yum!) bread crumb agar: 1lL H20, 18g agar, 100g bread crumbs), and it seems happy on it as well.
I'm not sure about higher temps, but I suspect it could tolerate them up to 90 or so.
I'm working on pics of the glowing cultures, and will post them when I have time (2040 or so).
Later, A
