Panellus stipticus. Bio-luminescent mushrooms 1

Hello, I was wondering if any one here has ever tried to grow Panellus stipticus, a bioluminescent variety of mushroom that grows on the east coast of north america? I found a place online to buy liquid culture syringes of the species; the stores website recommends wood as the appropriate medium for their growth. I however, have only grown p. cubensis and oyster mushrooms on pasteurized coffee grounds. The two main reasons I want to grow these mushrooms are that, one, I think a bio-luminescent mushroom is just a cool thing, and two, at my school, I am part of the botany club, and I was thinking we could sell these guys at our table on the quad and try to make some money for our club. If you've ever grown these, or seen them in the wild, or even if you have some experience in growing mushrooms that will only grow on sawdust cakes or in logs, let me know what you think of this and how you would proceed. Thanks for your time, and happy mushrooming!

Sterilize some grain in qt jars. inoculate the grain with the liquid culture. Then inoculate wood dowels with the grain that was colonized. Then you could sell the colonized dowels by the hundreds.

Use the 'search posts' link above to find numerous grows of this species. You can make it glow up to ten times brighter by adjusting the pH of your substrate to the 4 to 5 range. RR

Thanks RR. I actually found your response to a lab student wanting to grow these, but I am still working towards the posting minimum I need to access that section of the web site.

I'm sure by the time you get your grains colonized, you'll be there with post count. If not, grow them just like oysters, but add sulfur, vinegar, citric acid, etc., to lower the pH for maximum glow.
Now that I think about it, I've never tried this species on straw logs. That might be fun. I've only grown them on sawdust. RR

Hi, I followed instructions here (low pH in grain spawn) and inoculated using LC from sporeworks. it's been >1 week and I haven't seen any mycelial growth on the grains. Incubating in dark, ~70 f, same conditions that psilo would normally love. Anyone with experience wrt to the growth speed of these guys?

Just wait. it's almost invisible to see at first. It's not a thick mycelium like cubensis. RR

No, gypsum will give a neutral substrate, if anything. Use sulfur, vinegar, or citric acid. RR

On the topic of lemon juice...So you could bring your substrate up to field capacity using lemon juice rather than water? Or a half half mix?

You'll use a very small amount of citric juice, probably no more than 1% RR

yah you gotta be careful not to fry them i added a little bit to much to a agar plate to see if i could make it brighter and killed the shit out of it.
