How long can colonized jars last?

So, im having trouble finding horse poop to use and my jars have been finished for a week or so. How long can the jars last before negative effects start happening?

i sterilized my fridge and kept them jars in there for over a month and everything ended up turning out fine.

A month or two at refrigeration temps, but beyond that and the mycelium will go "permanently dormant", heh. Trust me, I tried some long term tests and not much happened.

Well they are still just sitting in the room i let them colonize in, the have the polyfil and aluminum on the top so i should be good for another couple weeks?

ehh... a couple weeks is excessive.  they're going to develop a deal of metabolites within only a week or two, to the point where they'll build up at the bottom of the jar.  just hanging on to a colonized jar for about a week and half at room temp after 100% has resulted in as much as a half inch of gross yellow fluid collecting in the bottom for me.  (drained out and rinsed and it still worked... but obviously less than ideal.)  for a few weeks i'd definitely suggest refrigerating them - and getting them in there ASAP.

i've also stored colonized jars in the fridge for several months (well maybe 3 at max) and never experienced them going completely dormant... not sure whats up there either unless when you say long term you mean significantly long term :wink:  the trick is to leave them out at room temp for about 2 days and let 'em wake back up before spawning, otherwise their slow reaction can let competitors take the lead of your substrate...

Maybe my experience was just luck (as a lot of stuff in this hobby is, it seems), but I made a post awhile ago about my popcorn jars I had forgotten about in a closet @ room temperature for about 6 months. All the jars were 100% when I put them in the closet, and one thing led to another and I forgot they were there. After almost 6 months, I found my treasure, and figured I would spawn to a few substrates to see if the jars did indeed have any viable myc. Expectedly, the myc. took a long time to transfer over the substrates, but it DID. After about 2 weeks the trays were looking like a tray with healthy fresh spawn would after about 3 days  :mad:, but once again, it did work. All the trays colonized and fruited normally other than the delayed start. potency was also normal.

Like I said though this could have been a once time experience and I havn't tried to replicate it.

btw, ALL the jars did have about 1/2 inch of myc waste in the bottom of each jar, but the grains were not waterlogged or soggy. The original quart of grain had also shrunken down about 1/3 of its original size.

Actually, grains have been found better for mycelium storage than agar slants, but unfortunately take way too much room in the refrigerator. However, I've used jars that have been stored fully colonized in the refrigerator for several years.

Put them in the refrigerator at full colonization, then when you remove from the refrigerator, allow three to five days at room temperature before spawning.

I just had a pint jar that was fully myced out SO nice and white! I mean this thing looked like a bottle oc clouds! It was from a g2g transfer that I had done from a jar that was from an innoc group. However I had no room to use it so I ended up saving it for about two weeks. NO sign of contams visually, but when I opened it up I definitely got a sweet smell(aspergillis???)that was definitely NOT that wonderful shroom smell. And the center(wbs)was gooey and poorly myced. I ended up taking some electronic components out of a small clear bin I was storing them in...and spawned the white parts only to the only thing I had left(out of horse poo after the other trays)which was miracle grow MC soil with verm added...which I had pasteurized the day before...in that small box. It is incing now and who knows....maybe I'll get something and maybe not.
I would guess that you cannot save jars after they are fully myced unless you do as has been said by others: refrigerate.
I had 12 jars from my initial(inoc)run that were white, and fully colonised. No contams and ONLY that great mushy smell. Oddly, even though this g2g jar was whiter...the center must have been contamed. So it was probably on its way out anyway. I am surprised to see though, that such a strongly colonised /white jar could yet be contamed. I honestly do not know if the contams were always growing deep iside or I just gave the jar too much time and the contamination got a chance to grow? Weird. I would be leary from this about trusting myced jars that have sat around...but that is just me.
