PICS of really weird underground fungal fruts ID help wanted please
    #6132819 -

That's chunks of wood mulch and some dead grass that are held together by a white fungus that was attached to these fruit/things.
I found these in an ornamental flower bed while weeding, there are quite a few. The flower bed is drip-irrigated potting soil with wood mulch.I have also found these growing close to the surface off a bike trail about 20 miles from where these were found. I believe them to be fungus because this mycilium looking stuff appears to be the only root structure attached to them.

Description:
They are 'squishy' on the outside for lack of a better word.
they dont have any particular scent to them.

as you can see from the above pic, it appears that there is a strand of mycilium still attached to a small chunk of multch.

The outer part is like a very flexible rubber, the brownish stuff is like a paste and the pointy center part is very dense compared to the rest of it but still fragile.

The bigger specimen was hard at the 'point' as though the inner structure was going to poke through and possibly break above the surface"?".

As you can see there is a big difference between the smaller one and the big one in color and in the shape of the inside, it appears that there is still some metamorphosis going on.

One clue is that someone told me that these really stinky and phallic shaped mushrooms were found in this exact spot last spring,
they supposedly smelled like death. maybe these are an early stage of those mushrooms?

I have never heard of any plantor mushroom that resembles these.

I thought they might be truffles, but I searched for pics of truffles and they dont look like it.
If anyone knows about fungus that grows like this, please tell me so I can have a starting point for trying to ID these.
Thanks :sun:

Looks like a mini stinkhorn in the last photo. my guide says stinkhorns (phallaceae) emerge from a round to oval "egg"...

EXCELLENT! Thanks for the id, I searched stinkhorns and found lots of interesting and funny facts.

So far according to the pics Ive seen I believe these "eggs" are immature
(Mutinus elegans)Elegant stink horn

Here's a link that shows "eggs" like these and a mushroom the same orange color as the inside of my big "egg".
mycology is fun. I'll keep watching that flower bed and see if I can get a pic of a mature one if any pop up before winter.

Often it works to take one of those eggs and put it in moist sand - it will "hatch" just like if it were still in the ground.

Happy mushrooming!

This is true.  One time I found a mushroom "egg" near by a rotting Amanita.  The temps were hot and very sunny, and I was worried this little egg wouldn't have a chance, so I gently dug up the egg and loosely buried it underneath a a plant, so that it would have shade.  I came back a few days later and found a mature Amanita where the egg was buried.

I'm trying it, I just buried some in some moist sand in a styrofoam cup, should I transplant the sand into the ground outdoors tomorrow or will they fruit-in-a-cup so to speak?

Hmm, should be fine in a cup.... Maybe set the cup outside.

Toxicman have you had the nerve to eat these before? They do look pretty gross, and the fact that they turn into "dogs cocks" is also somewhat off putting.

I never have, although Orson and Hope Miller told me a story about being served sliced stinkhorm eggs on crackers once. Given the situation they felt obliged to eat them. I don't think I really want to try them.

Happy mushrooming!

I was just telling my friend last evening, about the stinkhorn eggs that where in her garden landscape. Told her come spring we're going to be smelling a mushroom similar to rotten flesh. She's not looking forward to it. "Stink Horns, what the hell are those"!!!!! I had a good laugh... of course she thinks I'm nuts.... Nofindum...
