Can you pastuerize too long? Thanks RR!!

Hi - How's it going? To pastuerize if you normally put hpoo in an oven bag and sumberge it in 160 degree water for an hour or so in an insulated cooler with a weight holding the bag down - and you do the same with straw in a laundry bag - after an hour or so the water cools down below 140 degrees - my question is what if you left the straw and poo in the cooler and water over night slowly cooling and when you checked it in the morning the temp was around 90 - 100 degrees or so? Can you over pastuerize? Could that poo and straw be used or should it be tossed? Both were pastuerized for the correct temp for an hour so I would think they can be used. What do you think?

You don't pasteurize by sticking a plastic bag in 160F water for an hour. If you did that, the interior of the bag would never exceed 100F and no pasteurization would occur.

You want the center of the substrate to BE at 140 to 170 for one hour, but NO longer than two hours. Any way you figure out to do that works fine, but you'll almost always have to add hot water during the process as your substrate absorbs heat from the pasteurization water. You'll need a meat thermometer.

Hi Roger - Thanks a lot for the reply I really appreciate it. It was only 4 cups of hpoo so I'm not sure the center temp really wouldn't be much of an issue. The bag as pretty much flattened by my weight and the depth was no more than 1/2". I should have listed more details with my question. I kept checking the water temp and replaced the water twice as my cooler is pretty thick and holds the temp fairly well. I'll just start over and take your advice as you put the poo poo on my hpoo -lol!!!

Let me ask you a couple more questions if you don't mind. I've done bigger bags (than 4 cups) of hpoo in the past and have had contamination issues. Your reply to my post would explain why. The center of the bags was not getting patuerized. Most of the success that I've had is when I've pastuerized very small amounts of hpoo (in the bags)and used it in conuction with straw and colonized WBS and cased it w/peat verm. Basically when I used a little Hpoo I had success and when I used more Hpoo I had contamintion and failure.

My typical ratios have been:
1 cup hpoo
3 qts colonized WBS
enough straw to fill up an 18qt dishpan 3"-4"

I came to the conclusion that I was really only doing cased "straw blocks" due to the very low ratio of Hpoo. I keeep reading posts of people using higher poo ratios and have wanted to do that. Let me ask you these questions to get some final clarification that I can't seem to find in posts.

Can large ratios of Hpoo be colonzed successfully if it is properly patuerized? Say for example could you use 3 qts of Hpoo, 3 qts of WBS, and no straw to be cased?

Can my ratio below be used succesfully with 50/50 Hpoo Straw (instead of 1 cup Hpoo)?
1 cup hpoo
3 qts colonized WBS
enough straw to fill up an 18qt dishpan 3"-4"
