windows vista?
    #6073533 -

it's due out at the end of january. what have you heard, what do you think, etc?

it looks like it will cost several hundred dollars and take up a pretty hefty overhead on any computer running it. they've thrown in the eyecandy, but input and customization from the user end is zero compared to say, kde or gnome. the windows way means incorporating DRM and "trusted computing" nonsense. there's a bunch of new and untested code about to be tested for holes out in the real world.

would anyone actually buy this if it wasn't installed by default on their new computer? this is definitely not a direction i want to see the OS i use moving in. if i hadn't switched to gnu a couple years ago, i'd be really tempted to do so now. in any case, i'd keep my free copy of win2k close at hand.

there's no way i'm buying a VAR machine again or suggesting one for anyone else... not with vista crippling it and jacking up the price tag.

I will consider an upgrade after Vista-SP2 comes out and the majority of the major bugs have been fixed.

... but it's Microsoft... they don't ever release untested, buggy code.

from what i've read, there's an aspect of vista i'll really look forward to. as it stands with media center '05, using a coaxl cable to my tuner i'm limited to 125 channels. using the s-video from my digital cable box to the tuner and an IR blaster to the cable box remote sensor, i can record my premium channels. however, since i do not have an extra cable box to devote to my computer, i am mostly confined to using the coaxl connection because my housemate watches a lot of T.V. allegedly w/ vista i'll no longer need the cable box, the computer itself will function as it and i'll be able to record my shows. now if only it would record to mpeg2, then transcoding for dvds wouldn't take for-fucking-ever... but alas, it'll be worth it for me.

I'm sure MS will throw a monkeywrench in that with some sort of DRM protection.

FUCK NO. They designed their network stack from scratch. All those years of security patches and fixes down the drain.

All the experts are saying avoid it like the plauge, even boycott. Umm DUH! Do we really need experts to tell us microsoft produces shitty code?

there is plenty of ways to dumb down the UI to run decently on lesser machines... but i am a sucker for the interface.

for what it's worth, i've been running the betas at work, and current ReleaseCan. 1 since labor say. i put machines through the paces at work, nonestop intense processing, exotic hardware i/o's, games... and i have not had ONE hang or crash in all that time with RC1. the 'user experience' is more protected, if that makes sense, doesn't want to run unverified thrid party stuff without confirmation. which i think for most users will cut back on crapWARE that inevitable gets installed. and i haven't found anything that hasn't run swimmingly, including proprietery software that hasn't been updated in years...

I see no compelling reason to buy bloatware which will require me to upgrade my hardware. Computers for me are TOOLS, if I feel compelled to have a monetary black hole as a hobby, I will get a mistress.
