What's the deal with the Core Duo processor? I'm buying a computer...

I'm about to buy, or build - haven't decided which, a new computer.

I'm a little confused about this Core Duo business. Everything I've read related to it's performance seem to indicate this is the current champion. Though as I understand it, it isn't 64 bit? So it won't be able to fully utilize Vista's capabilities?

Why would Intel release a chip so soon to Vista's release that will be at a disadvantage then?

I'm not necessarily interested in having the fastest, most expensive processor, but if the tech behind the chip is really that good or revolutionary, I at least want to consider it. Are the Athalon 64's the only 64 bit processors? They should work with Vista fully as well shouldn't they?

The Core Duo's been out for a while now, i believe. At least they are now built into most PCs available at the moment. From what i know they are not 64-bit processors. However they should be able to handle Vista as they say they do.

The Core 2 Duo chips on the other hand are just now being released by Intel and will support Vista 100%.

I myself am not too concerned about Vista since i already feel very comfortable with XP alone. I think if you're really looking forward to switching to Microsoft's new OS, then look out for a newer chip.

Oops, that's what I meant, the Core 2 Duo.

That too isn't 64 bit, correct?

Intel Core 2 Duo processors will support 64-bit technology.

the core 2 duos are not 64bit chips. they use em64t like other intel chips have for the last 3 years or so. it is 100% vista ready, though. google 'EM64T' if you want an in depth analysis on how they function in 64bit land.

Interesting. I read up on it, but I'm now unsure of whether the AMD chips are 64 either. It seems to me that are doing virtually the same thing, albeit marginally better.

Would this be a correct assessment?

The Duo are not true 64 bit, but they can emulate it, just like AMD 64's do. Either of the chips will be able to run 64 bit applications.

i think the Itanium chips are true 64-bit (not to mention they have a whopping 24MB cache in the dual-core version (12MB per core). whenever seuss wakes up i'm sure he will let us know about sparc.

The ultrasparc is a true 64 bit chip that has been out since the mid 1990's... of course, you won't find Microsoft's crap software running on Sun hardware.

Gomp I would wait untill early next year to upgrade. Dual core support is still in it's baby stages and first quarter next year AMD is releasing their next generation cpu,which will either be amazingly advanced and the extra money will be worth it, also with the new release cpu prices will drop all over the board again. Plus DDR2 technology will be better developed.

by early next year they'll probably be putting triple core processors into PCs

the prices are good now, watch RAM Prices soar, if your gonna buy do it now or wait another 8 to 12 months. The core 2 duo's are some sweet cpu's. And they have quad core xeons already in engineering samples out there, so we'll see them in 3 to 6 months.

Because computers speak binary, not decimal. Imagine that you have two wires used to address each core:

0 0 = Core 1
0 1 = Core 2
1 0 = Core 3
1 1 = Core 4

Using only two wires, we can address up to four cores. The same amount of logic is required to address three cores as to address four. It would be a huge waste of resources to only include three cores.

If we added one more line, we could address up to eight cores:

0 0 0 = Core 1
0 0 1 = Core 2
0 1 0 = Core 3
0 1 1 = Core 4
1 0 0 = Core 5
1 0 1 = Core 6
1 1 0 = Core 7
1 1 1 = Core 8

In this case, we would see eight core processors, but not 5, 6, or 7 core processors, for the same reason.

The same can be applied to memory sizes, etc. This is why we never see a 31M stick of memory... memory sizes will always be an even power of 2 so that all of the address lines are utilized.



On a slightly different, but on topic, subject... why does everybody care about (or want) 64-bit? There are very few applications that benefit from 64-bit over 32-bit. Very, very few.
