Time for a new computer. I need a bunch of help
    #3649813 - 01/19/05 08:02 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Let's face it. This computer can not stand up to today's needs. 333 Celeron with 6 gigs of HD space. whoopty shit. it's fucked, spyware and viruses abound im sure, and so on and so forth. So I may be getting a new computer.

The problem is, I'm not sure what all I need/should get. I'm probably going to be buying from OTV which is a nearby place that builds custom computers for less money, or track down computer nerds from highschool that i know and get them to build me one. What all do I need?

I know I need a processor of some kind, as well as RAM, and a hard drive, sound and video cards. is that about it? Should I get a Pentium 4 or an AMD processer? I've heard good things about AMD. What about cd/dvd burners? are they expensive? Also I need to know how to reformat this one to completely wipe it clean, and when i get the new one, I'll need programs to eliminate spyware, popups, and viruses. There's a bunch of different programs though, i dont know what to get, bah.

Someone just help me out with getting a new computer so i get what i want and dont end up fucking it up.

Wow, you really do have a shit-house computer.

If you aren't too familiar with computers I'd strongly recommend getting an e-machine. Right now you simply cannot beat them for the price.

http://www.emachines.com/products/products.html?prod=eMachines_T3624

$409 with a 50 dollar rebate. You should be able to find it at futureshop.

emachines may not be alienware but they are just as good if not better than dell, gateway or any other big name brand.

If you really want to build a computer for whatever reason i'd recommend this setup:

CPU: AMD 64 3000+ 90nm Socket 939
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Harddrive: Seagate 80 GB Barracuda 7200RPM SATA model #ST380817AS
Memory: 1 Gig PC3200 DDR (no name or model but thats about how much and how fast you want it)
Video card: Whatever you want. If you don't give a shit about gaming get a cheap one. If you want to play video games then get a more expensive one.

Has a great processor that you can overclock wonderfully later on. Processor runs cool which means you can put on a quieter fan if you want.

You'll get further calling them geeks than nerds. Nerd has negative connotation whereas geek is positive to us types.

go to wal mart and get what they have for $500... you won't do better than their price and it will blow your present computer away...

YES, build your own computer, that is the way to go. I would suggest the AMD 64 as well, and make sure your new motherboard has PCI express, this technology will really be hot stuff in a little while. And www.Pricegrabber.com is your best friend when it comes to computer hardware.

CPU: AMD 64 3000+ 90nm Socket 939
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum

Socket 939 is not worth the investment, purchase socket 754 save the 100 dollars, and don't worry about the 3 percent gains from 939. PCIExpress won't be mainstream for at least another year or two. Budget wise purchase an agp card. Best budget cpu/performance would be this.

AMD64 3000+(socket 754)
1 GB(Kingston value ram or corsair or muskin, whatever is on sale)
DVD Burner
120 GB 8 Meg cache hd (I love seagate due to no noise)
128mb Descent video card or less if you don't play games.

This is what you do about reformatting, set up your entire computer, all the software etc you want. Get a copy of norton ghost(Pm me if needed) Create a backup image of your hd ( this is like a picture if its current state). Then when you wish/want to reform you load norton ghost and this picture and its back where you started. No need to go through the long boring reloading of windows.

If using pricegrabber, please use resellerratings to verify the vendor's current status
