Building a new computer
    #3254692 -

Well, the computer I have now has had a good run but it's about time for me to build a new one. I've just recently started saving up. Just looking for any feedback on what I've picked out so far. Nothing is final since by the time I have all my money saved up, something better might be out. Anyway, here's what I've been looking at lately.

Athlon 64 FX 53 (S939) - From what I've read, this outperforms practically everything else as of now, including the Pentium4 extreme. I've never been a big fan of pentium however the P4 Extreme still has the Athlon FX beat on media encoding. That's not really a big deal to me since it wasn't by too much. All the extra cache on the FX is great, even though it won't be used all the time.

I'm not too sure on a motherboard yet. Obviously, it's going to have to support a 939 pin processor. I know I want something with TV out. It's also gotta support RDRAM and have onboard ethernet.

For RAM like I said, I'm looking for RDRAM. Probably Corsair, and as much as I can get.

For video cards, the best thing I've seen out lately is the ATI 9800, but if there's anything better let me know.

Sound card is undecided as of now, but I've been thinking about a SB Audigy.

DVD Writer (haven't decided)

CD Burner (haven't decided)

I'll probably go with a 100 gig hard drive. I don't want to keep too much on it which is one of the reasons for the DVD Burner.

Everything else, monitor, keyboard & mouse, tower, power supply can be decided later but I'll also take reccomendations on these. Hell, if I can I'd like to get the motherboard & processor together since it'd be cheaper. The processor alone goes for around $800.00

I thought RDRAM was dead..

Rambus? I was under impression that it's better than DDR speed and efficiency wise.

Corsair makes great memory. Also I can recommend the new nforce4 boards as they have pci express and SLE support already in them. These capabilities will make the motherboard worth more longer assuming that pci-xpress is going to be adopted and it most likely will!

Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded.

Not gonna find RDRAM go with Corsair XMS....also might want to consider going with a DDR2 motherboard. I would go with Asus, Abit or Epox they have always been the best for me.

9800 is a great card but kind of behind the times now, you probably want to look into an XT or an X800.

I would go Audigy 2 on the soundcard...everything else is pretty much up in the air
