It somewhat depends on what you'll be using the computer for, and even within a single manufacturer's product line there may be some great systems and some duds. In general I recommend Monarch Computers, they can sell you a prebuilt box with a common configuration or custom-make one to your specs. Unlike systems from major OEMs, theirs use high quality off-the-shelf components and are easily upgradable. Their prices are also among the most competitive.

I would never buy a brand computer, mo money, mo bullshit. What do you intend on using your computer for and whats your cash limit?
Online vendors are they way to go.
canada - www.ncix.com (low prices, only 6% tax, great shipping speeds)
USA - www.newegg.com , or ww.zoomfly.com

there's companies that build computers for you and include driver and software CDs for ~$20 additionally. Same warranty and so on but you don't get a nice looking Gateway or Dell logo on your comp. Much cheaper and you can get a dynamo- nearly future proof- computer and have no need to upgrade for ~$1000... Now if you just order the parts and put them together it's as easy as a basic lego set and you could end up spending ~$700.
That's what I did and my comp is going strong for 7 years nows.
