ph meter...

I was thinking about buying a digital PH meter from one of the vendors on this site. The ph meter is only going to be used to check out the ph level for casings. Is a ph meter really worth the $?

I don't think so. I would personally find a recipe that works for you, using materials that will be consistently available (name brands), and formulate a recipe that has the appropriate PH. Buy a box of PH test strips and continue experimenting until you have the right PH level with the best results. Once you have a recipe that has the perfect PH, using the same materials over and over, stop testing.

either buy this one, or get some soil Ph strips.




There is a key point in Wronguy's post that cannot be overlooked too.

he says once you have found the correct PH for your recipe,
continue to use the same materials without testing.


SAME MATERIALS is the key point there.
all peat, vermiculite, and everything else has varying PH levels.
peat from one company to the next is different.
vermiculite from company to the next is different.
so once you have that recipe, keep the SAME brands and materials.


doesn't hurt to test a batch once every month or three just to be sure.
it only takes a minute.


oh, and by the way, that meter I linked to also shows moisture content :thumbup:

I guess I'm not there yet , I've never needed that meter .

okay, maybe no one will ever need it.
I don't really need it.

a good eye for moisture content and soil pH strips are all anyone
really needs.


but they sure are handy to have....

some day, i may actually just shell out the cash it's only paper. Plus i think a digi pH tester is more accurate then paper tests.

I'm thinking about buying that meter to test soils at various project sites, and also to make potting mixes for seedlings and finally for mixing casing layers/substrates for mushrooms. So could you please give me an update as to how reliable this meter has been for you? Will it also test the pH of water if you dip the meter into a glass?

perhaps, perhaps not.

at any rate i doubt they will be checking this thread anytime soon.

for best results i suggest you use the search function for something along the lines of

"reliable PH tests"
or many variations of that until you find what you are looking for.
