Stamets uses a Kelway HB 2.
After seeing him use one years back.
I bought one.
I love that puppy.
It removes the guess work.

Moisture
There is an Asian made clone of a Kelway HB 2 being sold on eBay cheap.
Around $30 total. I cannot speak, for it's accuracy.

EDIT to add:
I tested mine against Ph strips.
It was/is & remains accurate enough for me & its 12 years old.

Is it necessary for the soil to be moist before you check the PH? Also how important is it to check the PH of the water your grains soak in? Especially if you were adding coffee to the mix?

If it is not MOIST, neither Ph or moisture meter will work.
No need to check grain soak water Ph.
Unless you live in high alkali - extreme hard water area.

I'd like a tip for helping my Kelway last a long time.
Do you clean your Kelway's rings with the conditioning pads right after each reading.
Or do you store it with a simple paper towel wipe and the use the conditioning pads before each reading?
Also, do you use shiny or dull side of the pads? Thxs!

Wipe it clean with a freshly laundered dry cotton dish/bar towel, or wash rag while using it. Use shiny side of pad to recondition probe surface after each 6 to 8 times using it. Simple as that.

I own a Kelway HB2.
I also own one of those eBay clones.
The don't think the clone came with pads, or a case,
but I can speak for it's accuracy.
just last week I tested both the Kelway and the clone against
strips and a liquid test as well, both came out accurate.
surely good enough for my standards anyway.
I use them both, about the same. Both work great.
I'd suggest buying one, for anyone in this hobby.
pH is very important.

If you are willing to wait for the shipping time, you can order from the overseas supplier that agar listed, the meter runs about $31 including shipping. I just bought one and that is what the currency conversion came to and what I was charged (actually $30.62)
