Fake Picture?

So is it just me or does this look like someone made it in a 3D program, and not very well... It reminds of me how stuff looks at the Digital Blasphemy site, which is really rockin stuff of course, but no where near reality. It just doesn't look real..

No, i don't live there, but i've spent many years looking at digitized images, and it looks like it was made of a bunch of pixels, put through a very high antiailising program, and then posted on that site.

The rocks are very detailed, but look at the "spacecraft" on the bottom of the picture and then go play some computer game like GTA 3 or Unreal Tournament, you'll see a very similar look. A little too bright, very smooth... don't know, i've been staring at it for a while now and can't believe it's real.

Maybe the main thing is that every spot is in focus... but that's of course because it was made up of a series of pictures all taken to focus at that particular spot, so it comes across a little too perfect. Hm.

yeah, I think it just looks weird because it's a composite picture, and therefore has no perspective.
neither the foreground nor the background are a little fuzzy (as you would get in normal photography), and there's no telephoto crunching which is common in shots with a large depth of field

I can't fully explain why, but I'm still with those conspiracy theory nuts that say we've never been to Mars or the Moon.

That's because NASA can afford to use custom built cameras of extremely high quality, that you or I never get to use, because the martian atmosphere is very thin, so there is hardly any atmospheric perspective (unless you're in a dust storm of course), and because this picture was taken while the rover was still on its base station, so you're seeing a meticulously cleaned craft that has just opened up.

Combine that with compositing and serious compressing of the dynamic range to make a clear picture (if you look in the bottom right corner you see that both the sunlit and shadow parts have detail, which is another tribute to the high quality of the camera used.)

Low dynamic range is also a feature of rendered pictures and one of the things that make them look artificial.

All in all I think that the picture looks artificial because it was taken by unusual means under unusual circumstances.

Correct... the image you see was actually constructed from a collection of many (twenty or more) individual pictures and put together like a jigsaw puzzle. The color is also "artificial" as the cameras used are not color cameras, in the traditional sense.

the lighting on the hinge visible between one solar panel and the other looks shockingly like something that has been 3D-rendered.

I doubt it's a hoax, but damn, that rover looks fake as fuck.

I really think this is a fake. The lighting is off, the shading is off, and the entire picture just doesnt look convincing.

well, im fairly sure its a real picture (well, many real pics put together)  but if you look at the little instruments on the right side of the rover the shadow is comming towards the camera, but if you look at the rocks nearby on the right side of the pic, their shadows are facing almost the opposite direction..... taken at different times of day?  idk, those two parts of the pic are really close to each other, seems a lil curious, i must admit
