Simple meditation
    #6026477 -

Since I started college last week I've found myself going in and out of bouts of depression. After analyzing myself, I feel this is being caused by simple things like homesickness, having my good friends disappear, and the sudden workload I've recieved (I'm a cheistry major). I decided tonight that things need to change. I'm going to start excercising, eat healthier (err, hard to do at school), and I feel like I should begin to meditate. All I know about meditation is to clear my mind and hum...I need some help. Does anyway have a simple way of going about it that isn't too time-consuming? I'd like to do it every morning, but classes are early and I need my sleep too. I'll try anything you can give me.

in hopes that you can ACTUALLY adapt all of these things (eating right, exercise, meditation) into your everyday life, you might want to bite off a little smaller size there.

try getting your eating down correctly first. then a month later, exercise, then meditation, etc, etc.

also, meditation is more than just closing your eyes and humming. i suggest doing a fair bit of research on it before you just dive in.

try this site: http://www.vipassana.com/meditation/mindfulness_in_plain_english.php

it's one of many many approaches to meditation, but this one seems (to me at least) to be the middle of the road type of an approach.

good luck my friend! start small and slow, get comfortable, you will not regret picking up meditation practices!

use the search engine.

humming is not meditation it is a musical instrument.

why is "meditation" coming up when you feel lonely?

here is one from an earlier post of mine this year

Quote:
A most simple meditation which is from Heart Of Buddhist Meditation
- obtain a relaxed body position (I do this lying down as easily as sitting or in half lotus)
- let a few breaths go by normally then while focusing your mental energy on the tip of your nose (a disk about the size of a dime is fine – consider a slight pressure)
- follow the in breath
“beginning …. middle… end…..”,
then follow the out breath,
“beginning …. middle… end…..”,
keeping the attention on the tip of the nose, repeat this for ~20 minutes.

- if you have a very deep breath, you can add “this is a deep breath..”
- if you wander you can add “resuming…”

This can be done anytime or any place. It can build to a great psychic resonance or merely put a pause into a chain of repetitive thinking. It is extremely simple and is supposed to stay that way like working in a garden; take breaks or you may bake in the sun or be drenched by the rain.

The simplist meditation is the TM-type meditation of the Art of Living people. I would recommend TM but it's very expensive and a fucked up organization now. But Art of Living is pretty cool. Also see Ammachi, she will give you a personal technique. A technique from an avatara of Mahakali is pretty neat. On the other hand, though it doesn't seem like it I'm really a Buddhist so I do the sadhanas of my lama. So I would also recommend something like Green Tara or Saraswati practice for a student, etc...blah blah blah...can't remember the last time someone listened to me....

meditation is not coming up because i feel lonely, it's because i want to center myself. And i did not thinking humming really had anything to do with it..it was more of a joke.
