morning glory help

hey guys, dont post much in here but i got a quick few questions regarding morning glories. i live in southern arizona and the monsoons have been hitting pretty hard this year. ive been neglecting the yard for quite sometime and consequently i got all sorts of stuff growing, though mostly weeds.

today i finally got out there to cut back the jungle that is my yard and noticed amidst the weeds i got a morning glory growing on a small fence bordering my patio. ive been surfing around trying to find a pic similar to the one growing (my digi cam got stolen) and this is the best i could come up with.



though the flowers are not as blue as those in the pic, this is the only one that i could find that matches the foliage. most others seem to have a heart shaped leaf. the flower is more of a purple color like this one



so i guess my questions are these...

do all varieties of morning glories contain lsa?
morning glories are annuals, correct?
im assuming that this is a low maintenance plant, but is there anything i should know in terms of care for this plant?

anyway, im sure i could find all the info myself with a little more searching, and will probably do that anyway. but i couldnt pass up an opportunity to post in this forum :smirk: besides, an active plant just popping up in my yard is worthy of a post. ive never consumed morning glory seeds, though the experience interests me a great deal.

1. No. There are many common wild varieties that don't contain LSA. Around here I see a lot of Ivy Leaf Morning Glory, which is inactive.

I would say it's probably Ivy Leaf Morning Glory if the leaves are similar to those in the first pic. It's got a very distinct deeply lobed leaf that is very different from the heart shaped leaves of Ipomea Violacea or other LSA containing types.

Yeah, they're definitely nice flowers to have around the yard. Also, starting MG from seed is too easy. Here are some of my Heavenly Blue seedlings, 8 days old :

8 days old? mine are 9 days old and a foot tall!

Yeah, I guess.  I've never grown 'em before so I didn't have anything to compare that to.  I do know that they're not stretching for light, and they're developing their first sets of true leaves.  But maybe they are behind.

edit:  I also should've mentioned that it was 8 days since I soaked the seeds in water for 24 hours.  I put them in dirt after that and it was a couple days until I saw any growth.  Those seedlings themselves emerged probably about 5 days ago.  Hopefully they'll grow another few inches within the next 4 days.  :laugh:

they are weeds in every sense. they shoudl grow and spread very quickly. they also have the habit of suffocating other plants...so if you have a garden, watch them!

there are also some toxic types of morning glory, so i personally would not go picking seeds based on an id of a picture that is not yours. you can often buy the seeds by the pound dirt cheap of the correct variety. need to make sure they are not treated with fungacide though.

did you nick your seeds ? the reason i ask is i have tried growing this plant numerous times after nicking the seeds and soaking for anything from a few hours to a couple of days. so far none have sprouted.

they were all planted in a mix of potting mix and seed raising mix. i think i might just mix in some good old garden dirt to my next attempt  :crazy:

why in gods name would you need to knick a morning glory seed? just plop em in the soil and sprout, use a little heating pad or some syran wrap over the top if needed, play around with natures elements u will find something to bring em up. hell i think most just put em in the soil, water here and there, and before they know it, the damn things pulling their fence apart (it did for me )

this wasnt an attempt at anything by any means. i just got excited that a potentially active plant sprouted on its own in my yard. i will not eat of these seeds as there is doubt as to their activity. but this has re sparked my interest in the LSA experience. for now i will just enjoy the flowers friendly hello in the morning as i leave for work. sometime in the not so distant i will opt for something a little more rewarding.
