Morning Glory Kills! Gardens.

I have a lot of people here ask if they can plant morning glory and that they want to plant it in their gardens as a nice wall cover or fence cover etc. and it seem lots of people want to grow it here as well, although for slightly different purposes. I do liek the plant, it is very beautifull. in fact i enjoy the looks of most all speceis of morning glory. But what people dont seem to realise is how bad it really is if not properly contained. This isnt some broom or ivy or somthing like that that is either non lethal or slowish growing (relative).
This plant is not a clematis or a wisteria, it is a weed. if a vine is all you want and need it to cover somthing consider those long before morning glory.
once this plant gets a hold it spreads. it spreads fucking FAST! Not only that it twirls its way up other plants and literally chokes them to death. it gets such a grasp (especially on garden type plants, not so much trees) it stops all/most flow of the plants nutriens and water. it does quite seriously kill.
In our yard the previous owner planted a small seedling (non active species, and more aggressive than the active ones) it is now 15 years later and everywhere. we have been here for 9 years this summer and have been trying to kill since we got here. we have now finally got all but one bank. so today i was pulling more out and figured i would see how long the main root actually goes. i did a few plants that the above ground vine was 4-7' long. a few came back to the same root. all of the roots were 7'+. the longest being 18' 4", and it brok as did all teh others. this plant may not seem like it is invading as there may only be a small vine but beneath the soild it could quite easily be a massive network of roots waiting to sprout out new shoots. this is how it spreads so damn fast, then they seed as well.
Anyway the heavenly blue isnt as bad as some, but is certainly able to do unsightly damage. if anyone is planting this plant MAKE SURE YOU PLANT IN A NO DRAINAGE POT! it is tuff it can handle floods every now and then, but the surrounding area cannot survive a spread of morning glory. it has killed thousands of perrenial/annual type garden plants here. but its main prized were lilac trees, sumac trees, maple trees (small), squash/pumpkins, and 17 8' cedar shrubs. It is considered a noxious weed here for a very good reason. just be wise when planting the stuff and you should be fine.
peace,
kada

If any of you have had the pleasure of getting rid of a blackberry infestation you know what it may be like with this stuff. only difference is the roots are longer and weaker (cant just tug em), and pigs dont work

My backyard fence was completely covered with morning some morning glory type plant. It even went through the cracks of the wooden fence. I cleared all of that shit off in an hour or two. Now I got a nice place to grow...

About half the corn in my little garden was wiped out last year my morning glory that grows as a weed around here.
I could hardly believe it... in about a week while I was traveling, the morning glory wound right up the corn stalks and knocked them over under the wieght of the vines.

pretty powerfull plant. im actually pretty suprised to see that it did not come back on your fence downforpot.
I cant see corn doing too well wqith it...musta sucked eh.
if you got a blackberry problem, hack em down and rent a pig or a few and they will dig up and eat the roots. best way i have ever seen, and its safe for the environment.

wow thats kinda interesting. this is the first time i have ever heard of them not being a problem when planted in the ground. even the lsa forms i have had bad bad experiences with, although only in smaller garden type plants.
we lost all but one huge maple and the arbutus on our property because of it. thats nice that someone has had good experiences with it. to me its right up there with that bloudy brrom and ivy people brought here. talk about devastating the natural environment.
anyway i just really needed to rant, and i think people definatly need to seriously consider there placment and planting techniques with it. just as one would with certain bamboo...

I've got my MGs growing on the deck at my parent's house. They were growing right next to some vine that my mother has that produces big yellow flowers. My MGs started clinging to her plants and I told her it was the battle of the vines...
2 weeks after my MGs got a hold of her plant she seperated them because my vine was winning. It kicked the other plant's ass. Broke 2 of it's vines completely. I've created a neat nail and string grid structure for the MGs to climb up. I'll get pics later in the season when it's impressive. These things ARE agressive as hell though.
