Kerouac totally called it.
    #6006247 -

"Everything was fine with the Zen Lunatics, the nut wagon was too far away to hear us. But there was a wisdom in it all, as you'll see if you take a walk some night on a suburban street and pass house after house on both sides of the street each with the lamplight of the living room, shining golden, and inside the little blue square of the television, each living family riveting its attention on probably one show; nobody talking; silence in the yards; dogs barking at you because you pass on human feet instead of wheels. You'll see what I mean, when it begins to appear like everybody in the world is going to be thinking the same way and the Zen Lunatics have long joined dust, laughter on their dust lips."

I've been reading Dharma Bums the past 2 days, I'm about halfway through, and so far I like it more than On the Road.

you reccomend it over On the Road? I read that a few weeks ago and wasn't as impressed with it as I thought I would be, but still enjoyed it.

i loved on the road, i dont think dharma bums could possibly be any better. don't really know what it's about tho, just know it's another famous kerouac book. is neal cassady (dean morarity) in it?

Crazy.

I knew he had been arrested for failing to report a murder, but I could never find anymore information on it.

Is Cassady's son the same John Allen that we have on the board? they seem like they'd be about the same age

I second Dharma Bums. I read his books and was like wtf am i a recarnation of Jack? Because before i even knew who he was or what was happening i was already doing these things he writes about. After writing down a bit of my own adventures before i ever read him people compared me to him.

I like listening to him speak. I like his interviews and his spoken words. Try to find some. They are good listening.

I thought big sur was so boring. it's one of the few books that I started and never finished. On the road was my favorite book by him but even that didnt stand out for me. Some people just dont dig his style of writing and im one of them.

Yeah, Dharma Bums is a classic; right up there with OTR. It has some great moments, and I think that's one of the things to look at in reading Kerouac -- those great moments; those shining diamonds on a jeweler's-felt black sky; those personal, improvisational, insights that flow like the round, watery, notes of some unknown jazz musician trying hard to make a masterpiece by midnight, blowin' clunkers one minute, and in the next, findin' that lost chord that'll shake the walls of Jericho!

However, I'm one of those guys who read pretty much everything Jack wrote, and enjoyed it all. It's a matter of individual taste, and personal resonance; I understand some people don't like his stuff; but then some people dream in black-and-white too...

And don't you know, that God is Pooh Bear?

He, who is not, is...
