I have a few simple questions...

I have just strted growing and I have a few questions. I am using a verm. brf substrate. Colonization is taking place in .5 pint jars. I plan to use a plastic tub to start primordia and fruiting. Perlite for humidity and probably Jiffy Mix to case. 1. How much can I expect to produce on avg. per pint or whatever is a useful measure? ( I am not sure if I will break up the mycelium completely or just into two to fruit) 2.I have read a suggestion that with my setup I can add a small fishtank bubbler connected to a tube to my fruiting container to "bubble in O2." But knowing CO2 is heavier wouldn't the O2 just bubble out of the top (the top isn't completely sealed as far as I understand in this setup) ? 3. How much increase in yield does one achieve with casing instead of fruiting the cakes undisturbed? 4. Using the standard method with my substrate, how long should it take to colonize? I have been patient for about a month and they are close but seemed to have slowed down. I even flipped one to drain the CO2 but it has not pickup the pace. I have many other questions that I haven't found answers to but I will start with these. Thanks for any help you can provide! beatle

1) never count your chickens before they are hatched. It is bad luck, especially with mushrooms. You will start growing for one reason, and soon it will all change. You still want to see them grow but for totally different reasons. Start with cakes, sitting in a lid full of verm, with about 3/8 " of damp verm on top. 2) yes , that's why you need a co2 drain near the bottom but high enough that the bottom will still hold a little water 3) hard to guess but not the way to start. 4)Too many possible variables to guess, if they are over half way, flip all of them, and remove the tape. It wouldn't hurt to fan the co2 out of the incubator every couple of days. They will finish up soon. There are those who fail at cakes then succed with casings, this is ovbiously a low humidity problem. The sensible way to start is with cakes. When you start to case, start with verm only. Then experiment with other things. There are several casings that greatly increase result but it doesn't seem to be something you just jump in to. I crashed two casings with jiffy mix. Just my 2 cc's on the subject. Hope that helps.

Thaks for the info WakingUpLate. I am a little weary to cut a hole for CO2 drainage being that I live in an extremely dry environment and am afraid that perlite just wont keep up the humidity. Any ideas? I understand that you think standard cake fruiting is the way to start but from what I have reserched, casing yeilds more and isn't that hard so I will probably experiment with several methods and see what happens. I am mostly following Paul Stamets "Mushroom Cultivator." thanks again
