Hi, im a new hunter, and have recently been looking through a cow field near my house. 15 miles SouthEast of Atlanta. The mushrooms i found have a greyish brown conical cap. they are darker when fresh and turn tanish as they dry. the gills are brownish black, and where the cap meets them it is white. the spore print was Jet Black. the stem 2 to 5 inches and very skinny. tannish at first, and bruised a mahogony purple. growing directly from and around cow manure, sometimes in clusters, sometimes only one. a friend of mine said they are active, and he ate some of the same ones i found from a different hunt. i cant trust his knowledge, he didnt know what gills were. HELP PLEASE, i do not want to die from eating these.

You can always be sure not to die from eating them if you don't eat them. Post a picture if you can. Your discription isn't bad for a first time but it is somewhat vague. Most would agree it's a good idea to collect mushrooms of different types and become fairly comfortable with ID'ing before munching a bunch of actives (nonactives or poisinous ones for that matter) you aren't real familiar with. That said I think we all would like to see a picture!

It could be a Psathyrella species. Could it have had a tint of purple in the spore print? When you bend the stipe, does it snap?

i would post a pic, but i dont have a digital camera. i showed my friend the mushrooms today, and he said they are the same exact ones he used to pick in Leeds Alabama, and that he used to eat these all the time. another experienced friend i have, which i can only talk to online said to feed a mushrooms to a dog or cat, so i gave my dog a small small mushrooms. its been atleast 24 hours and she is 100% fine. should i go by that or not?

If you can't post a pic, then just don't eat any mushrooms, especially if one of your friends tries to sell you some. Your friends are retarded. How old are you and your friends?

Again, Don't eat any mushrooms. (Store-bought is ok, as long as YOU are the one who buys them) Don't eat any mushrooms your friends claim to be store-bought.

no, the second friend i was talking about is an experienced hunter, and he told me to feed it to my dog. I am 16, the experienced friend is 19. the other 17. they arent trying to sell anything, psychedelics arent sold in stores anyways. the experienced guy wouldnt ever tell me false info or something harmful to me, ive known him close to my entire life. the 17 year old ate some of them tonight on his own, he said they were edible(active) and chowed down. and this is the second time he has eatin this same type of mushroom. what can you do about tiny larva crawling through the gills? what gunna happen to my friend since he ingested some of them probably?

Even if it is not harmful to your friend doesn't mean that it's safe for your dog. Do you think your dog would want to trip? And the experienced hunter is 19? You think we will be impressed by that? Your friend is an idiot. Oh, and the minimum age to post here is 18.

Gave mushrooms to a k-9? Man thats really fucked up. especially because you were just using rover as a ginuea pig. You should be taken out back and put out of your misery, like ol' yeller. Seriously, are your priorities that screwed that you would endager the life of a family pet because you wanted to trip balls for a few hours. You are a joke. Sounds like none of your experienced hunter friends know how to identify shrooms, and theyre probably getting poisoned, and thinking the reaction is a trip. From my experience, the gills from fresh cubes are more of a grey/purplish grey color. Spare your dog any liver damage and dont use it as a guinea pig anymore, spend some time and learn how to ID a mushroom for your damn self, or take a pic and description of it and put it on here so we can do it for you, thats what we are here for.

Well said hooksbooks. newhunter - learn to identify for yourself. Don't trust people because you have 'known them for all of your life' and they would 'never hurt you.' Hardly anyone gets poisoned on purpose.

You need to go to the library, find a few books on mushrooms and start reading before someone gets hurt! You have to take this a little more seriously dude!!! Most of the people posting on this website have devoted a fair bit of time studying mushrooms and how to identify them properly. Some of us have been collecting mushrooms for years and still have difficulty with certain species. Read a little bit about amatoxins and other poisons in mushrooms so you can understand what you are risking before you just start eating any old mushrooms. Also your friends sound ignorant to me. Don't listen to them!
