Sinusitis Due To Past Coke Use?
    #5914382 -

I've had some pretty bad issues with my sinuses for about as long as I can remember now and I've come to the conclusion that it's probably from using coke.  I haven't kept track of how many times I've done it but if I wanted to I could have (probably only about 12-15 times).  I don't think the problem is with the frequency of use though.  I think the problem is with the amount used on each occasion.  I first tried it at 17.  I'm now 24 and the last time I did it was this last New Year's so about seven months ago.  I had about 0.8 grams to myself.  I'm not sure what the most I did at one time was but it probably wasn't too much more than that.  That's still quite a bit though I guess.  A lot of this was probably because of the people that I associated with but for the most part I can only hold myself accountable for my actions.

About a year ago I had some x-rays done and my doctor called me to tell me that I had acute sinusitis of the left maxillary sinus.  Then last August, the last time I flew in a plane, I had the most horrible experience on the plane's descent.  My nose was all screwed up, pressure started to build up in my head, my right ear started to pop and I was getting pressure pain all around my right eye.  The pressure around my eye was what really had me concerned.  I'm almost afraid to fly now.  Screw terrorism - that ain't why.  I just don't want my head to explode.  So now, don't ask me why I did coke again after that - just a really dumb decision I guess.

Back in April I had x-rays done of my teeth at my dentist.  These x-rays also showed the major sinus cavities and the folks there made a point of showing me that one of my maxillary sinuses was darkened and one was clear.  I forget which was which but I would assume the darkened one was the left side.  That was a bit disturbing to see.  They said that I should see a specialist about it and I explained that I have to no avail.  Most of the time when I see a doctor specifically for my sinuses they just look up my nose and then give me a nasal spray.  I'm open to whatever they suggest but sometimes I'm so congested that when I use a nasal spray in the one nostril it just runs right back out of my nose.

The left side of my nose is almost always what I have the problem with but once in a while it'll switch to the other side.  I've also noticed that sometimes my right ear will pop when I attempt to blow my congested left nostril.  I seem to feel the worst after sleeping, smoking a joint or having a few beers.  This kind of sucks too because I used to enjoy smoking and drinking more than I do now because of it.  The only things that seem to help are time without these 3 things or hot showers.

I'm planning on seeing an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor about this and, this time, actually giving them the benefit of the whole story.  Obviously I've made the decision that I won't be using any insufflated drugs any more.  I am very curious to see if anyone else has experienced similar problems to this though.  Please advise if you have.  I apologize for this being so long but there was a lot that I had to cover.  Thanks to anyone that reads all this.

Try snorting some dilute saline solution 1 tablespoon (sea salt ((NOT iodized regular salt)) in 8 oz distilled water (NOT tap water) 3-4x a day. Thats what my naturopath told me. Really snort it down and hopefully you can get enough into the left side. You may want to take a benadryl or two first to see if the antihistamine/decongestant activity helps.

The beer and weed ain't helping and if you smoke cigs it's time to quit.

My naturopath also has a machine that they use that will get your sinuses cleared. I haven't used it but he said he did once and thought his head would explode from the pressure. It uses some kind of expanding cups that force your sinuses open. Anyway that may be worth looking into if you have the courage to do it but I don't think it is really as dangerous as it feels just uncomfortable. The Ear Nose and Throat guy would likely know about it if you go to them.

Hey thanks! That was great advice. I appreciate your taking the time to read all that.

Fortunately I was able to give up the cigs 2 1/2 years ago.

But, yeah, I'll ask the ENT about all that when I go.

Hi man, I have a sinus surgery on the 11th of August. I am really looking forward to it to get rid of this constant feeling of pressure in my head. The flying thing I totally relate to, I had to fly home from the US and it was like 9 hours of hell. I use a hydropulse sinus irrigator, it pumps warm saline water through your sinuses. You could also try a netty pot (not sure of the spelling)cos its cheaper, its like a nose tea pot for saline. My problems have been caused by a lot of things I think really, I got very stressed over school work I convinced myself I couldnt do, I did too many shrooms whilst anxious and I moved to another country for a year. I think the stress of all these things just hammered my immune system so my existing allergies to cats pollen and dustmites were responded to in the most extreme ways. Hopefully once my life calms down a bit my allergies will too. Maybe you should get an allergy test just incase. All the best man.

Hey thanks for your post. I actually left out that I do, in fact, suffer from numerous allergies. A few years ago I was tested. It was the kind of test where they poke a bunch of holes in your back with various allergens to see what you react to and I reacted to almost everything. So I'm currently getting allergy shots every other week (3 shots each time). The shots are helping but they only help so much because I know I have this underlying condition that was largely brought on by myself. I know this is totally separate from allergies since allergies don't only act on one side of your sinuses.

There's also a lot of things that I think are contributing to my not feeling better in addition to the sinusitis. My girlfriend uses an ungodly amount of hair spray every day, the two other people that I work with smoke cigs around me and our business was just flooded a month ago so we have mold growing in the walls now. To top it off, my apt. was flooded too so we moved into my grandparents old house which is still dusty as hell.

I'm curious to see how you make out with your surgery. If you read this and remember to maybe you can let me know. All the best to you too.

I sure will, although I am supposed to feel fucked up for a few weeks after its done. Lots of blockage and nosebleeds. Would you have to pay for that kind of surgery in the US? I get it free in the UK.

Oh, I'm sure I would have to pay for it here. I've got HMO Blue for health insurance but I'm almost certain there would still be some kind of copay required. My copay is typically $15 for office visits and $50 for Emergency Room procedures. So since it's surgery I'd probably have to pay at least $50.

I set up an appointment with an ENT for the 24th of August. I'm gonna ask her about all possibilities - surgery, that machine that was mentioned and also if I should just try the saline solution for a while. I'm a bit reluctant to put anything else up my nose at this point but I'm pretty much open to anything. But, yeah, I'll let you know how it goes and you can do the same.

Just got back from the hospital, still feel whoozy from morphine. My nose is full of black encrusted blood but my sinuses do feel different. Feel like I have a killer head cold. Its gonna take 6 to eight weeks before everything is healed up and I know how effective it has been. How are you doing ?

I bought the Grossan Hydropulse sinus irrigation machine, $90 and some premeasured prepackaged saline etc. that you mix into water for $ 15.

It's designed to flush things out and also to make your cilia start churning again. Not unpleasant to use just feels a little odd at first. Works good.

I do think it's important to use distilled or filtered water to avoid pumping chlorine into your nose. Also the prepackaged powder has other ingredients than salt that are designed to be more like your bodies electrolyte balance. This also helps prevent any burning you would have if you just used salt. And don't use "regular" salt which has anti-caking additive and iodine. Kosher rock salt is a cheaper alternative to the packs and at least gets you away from the anti-cake and iodine.

The machine may be covered by your medical insurance, check it out with the ENT.

Hehe my mum bought me the grossan hydropulse too! How far do you turn the pressure control? I have it all the way to the top.

I have it just above low where it pulses up about an inch vertical, which is what they suggested in the instruction manual. I think high was more for the throat cleaning attachment.

Grossan hydropulse, huh? Okay cool. I'm wondering if I can look up some info on it online too. I guess it won't hurt for me to try. But yeah, I seem to just keep feeling worse and worse. I've got an ionic breeze that I clean weekly and I keep the filter in my a/c clean but that don't seem to matter much. I mean, I'm plugged up right now as I'm typing this - can't breathe thru the left nostril at all - so it sure would be nice to clear the crap out of my head.

I know the beer and weed doesn't help me any but I have cut down on both considerably. The thing that gets me is I know that I should be able to enjoy a joint or a few beers here and there, without it making my sinuses worse.

Oh well. I'll be seeing the ENT on the 24th so I'll probably add a post on 8/25 just to say how it went. Thanks again for the suggestions! And I did pick up some sea salt the other day (non-iodized). Maybe I can do something with that.

Well I found the hydropulse for sale online and, of 27 reviews, all but one were either 4 or 5 stars. Seems to be worth checking out.

Spend the money, get a box of 33 of the prepackaged salt mix it's worth it.

$115 including UPS you won't be disappointed, save the receipt and maybe you can get reimbursed for the machine.

Well, just for following up sake, I went to the ENT the other day. She pulled some little chunks of something (I forget what she was calling them) off my tonsils or out of the back of my throat. I had the pleasure of experiencing my first nasal endoscope - loads of fun! I couldn't believe how far she stuck that damn thing up my nostrils. My eyes started watering and I couldn't help but sneeze on her a couple times. After the endoscope she said that my main maxillary sinuses didn't look too bad but my middle tubule (or something like that) was enflamed. I guess the tubules are directly behind the nose. I asked her about the hydropulse and she said that it would probably be worth checking out. But she also recommended that I get a nasal catscan done within the next month and then come back for a follow up. At that point, she said, she might prescribe me a nasal spray unlike any that I've tried before. So I guess we'll see how things go.

edit: I was wrong about the middle "tubule". I'm pretty sure the word she used was actually turbine.

Thanks for the update.  Sounds like the typical doc, run a couple of tests and prescribe a med.  She may be talking about a nasal steroid for allergy.  I'm always a little leery of sprays or pills they always seem to work for a while and then you end up with symptoms worse than before.  Like when you take an antihistamine for example.

I've never had an endoscope but imagine it is much more unpleasant than the hydropulse unit.  Well a couple of chunks are gone, even if you don't know what they were it's a start!

Thanks for the update, I guess waiting for months on end for treatment is not limited to the UK then. I am still pretty swollen inside my head from the surgery but it is clearing and I am going to start using the hydropulse now things are calming down. As for the steroid sprays and the antihistamines I was on them months and they never did a damn thing but made me woozy. My desire for a drug free alternative lead me to irrigation. I hope to improve radically in the next few months because I want to go to Japan to teach in the new year. How does it actually feel for you is it distracting?
