Could someone use a metaphor for me, to explain magnetism to me? This is not a yes or/and no answer…

I don't know about a metaphor, but check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetism

Thank you..
But for an even more extensive info page, check: http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery?s=Magnetism&gwp=13
I am only after the "personal metaphor" explanation here, if someone would be so kind, and (preferably) find pleasure in doing so!
But, thank you anyways. Motivated by a good cause at least, I guess...

So, ... (with this/that in mind)
Anyone want to explain magnetism for me?

Fact is not very much is known about magnetism. It's a mysterious force and although we know a lot about how it behaves and how to create it we don't know much about the properties of how it does what it does. I'd give you a brief description of how magnetism arises but both of those links do a pretty good job.

It's not any more mysterious than any of the other forces.

My physics teacher used this explanation to help us wrap our heads around magnetism. An object that is magnetic affects some property the space around it. An opposite magnetic pole in the field of the first magnet behaves as if on a hill, and the first magnet is the bottom of the hill. Bringing 2 north or 2 south poles together makes some property of the space affect the magnet as if you were pushing them up a hill.
You could also use gravity as a metaphor for opposite poles, and squishing a spring for like poles.

Which means it is an awe inspiring wonder which defies comprehension unless you understand the universe entirely.
Really, a scientific explanation does not take the wonder away, it just jabs a pacifier up the hungry mouth of the rational mind

I'm right there with you wiccan. Was thinking the same thing. Anyone who doesn't find gravity at all mysterious is addled.
